Asking which party freed the slaves and which started the KKK is either a sign of being disingenuous or ignorant.
It is widely known and easily proven that the white southern Christians (mostly evangelical and southern Baptist) who formed the proslavery and subsequently pro Jim Crow political contingent in the southern states belonged to the Democratic party at the time of the civil war and during reconstruction through well into the 20th century, yet today overwhelmingly belong to the Republican party.
You can see that in the fact that you had to be a Democrats to have a good chance of being elected in any southern state in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s yet those states today are politically lead in majority by Republicans. The values in those states didn’t suddenly flip, those white southerners flipped parties for several reasons, among which was the Democratic party support for Civil Rights legislation. What didn’t change is that the republican party has consistently been the pro-business party.
