This week we heard the account of a mother in Ukraine who was raped by Russian soldiers after they’d killed her husband, while her terrified four-year-old son hid in the boiler room.

One of them, she told The Times, pointed a gun at her head and spat: ‘You’d better shut up or I’ll get your child and show him his mother’s brains spread around the house.’ They returned to rape her again, and taunted her: ‘Shall we kill her or keep her alive?’
