The President Is Killing Democrats

14 Days to Go and the President Is Killing Democrats

For the past few weeks, the White House has been trying to make the argument that the country's angry electorate is almost entirely mad about a) the economy and b) the administration's poor performance in "marketing" (the President's words) its agenda. This isn't new: Just about every underperforming administration -- and this includes Republican administrations -- blames voter disapproval on an inability to "sell" its agenda. They're wrong almost every time. The President and his party are in trouble because voters have examined their legislative record and have, for the most part, rejected it. President Obama's policies are an albatross around the neck of the Democratic Party and, as a result, congressional Democrats will probably suffer a historic defeat on November 2nd.

As we said last week, midterm elections are almost always a referendum on the President's performance in office. This is especially true when the party in power in Congress is aligned with the President -- as it is now. Yes, the economy is in extremely poor shape and this has created an overwhelmingly negative environment for Democrats, but many voters think that George W. Bush shares a large part of the blame for that. And to some extent, voters feel that Obama said he was going to fix things... and he hasn't. But something else is driving voter anger. Let's take a look at how voters rate the President's performance on key issues to help get a sense of what factors are driving the current environment:

* The President's overall approval rating in toss-up Congressional districts is toxic.

* Voter perception of Obama's handling of key issues is abysmal.

* There is also a substantial level of disapproval of many of the policies advanced by this White House.

* Republican interest in this election continues to be substantially higher than Democrat interest.

Must really suck for democrats that one of their favorite liberal web sites has even thrown in the towel and admitted Obama is a fuckup.

[sarcasm]No, no....actually what you are seeing in the republican part is the final kicks of death (kind of like when you shoot a deer) as they have been in their death throes (that's what I heard all the time in 2007 & 2008) since Obama came on the scene. It looks like they're showing a little life this election cycle but it is really nothing.;[/sarcasm]

Seriously, here, the republicans are running more against Pelosi than they are Obama. My congressman, Dan Boren, should win relatively easily so all his republican opponent can do is what I have seen on signs all across Arkansas and Oklahoma...."A vote for Boren is a vote for Pelosi." You can substitute the name of any democratic candidate for Boren's in the quote and that's what I see. I have to laugh when I see these signs.

Obama has like a 47 - 49 percent approval rating right now. Not extreemly good but not too bad. Pelosi's is way lower. So I agree....things don't look too well for democrats this election cycle.

They are running against Reid/Pelosi, saving the run against Obama for later when he is still further down in the polls.

If the republicans somehow win one or both houses, they'll have to constantly be on the move showing their hand talking about their program and how it would work before it gets either vetoed or killed by filibusters. Otherwise you'll find Obama in the next election effectively trying to blame everything that has gone wrong because of his decisions on the republicans...

It's just my area, but where I am, it's all split-screens with Pelosi. There is hardly mention of Obama.

She & Reid have hurt the Dems nationally much more than Obama, imo.

Exactly, while they do mention Obama (particularly the ads about Bennett being the 'Senator from Obama'), they are running against Pelosi/Reid...

Out of curiousity, which actions did Pelosi take that you think hurt Democrats?

I had noticed that immediately upon Pelosi becoming the first woman speaker of the house, the right wing machine began to demonize her.

The right-wing machine would have demonized any Democrat House Speaker.

Pelosi has played into their hands on several occasions, however. I don't think she has been a good leader. The one that stands out for me was her choosing to take one of the most critical moments in our recent history - the eve of the first bailout vote - to make a grandstanding, partisan speech slamming Bush, when leadership called for a much more measured tone to just get that thing passed.

It didn't, and TARP was delayed over a week at a time when every hour mattered. Many jobs were lost during that time. I still can't get over that, frankly....

Kinda reminds me of Sarah Palin's character assassination and attacks on her family by the Dems after she was picked for VP....only in Palins case, it was lies and innuendo that carried the day.

Do you see how insidious they are Onceler? Do you see what you wrote?

"any Democrat House Speaker"

BTW, it may seem petty ,it's not. Luntz did studies on it and because Democrat ends in rat, they believe there is a psychological effect.

I love Pelosi and I believe she has done historic things with this Congress, and that one day, perhaps after we are dead, but perhaps not, there's going to be a Caro-like "Madam Speaker" bio written about her that will cement her place in the history books.

However, I have forgotten the details of the incident you describe so I can't comment on that specifically.

No character assassination campaign is devoid of lies & innuendo. Pelosi has gotten as much as Palin ever has.

The truth hurt Palin much more, and her own words - especially in those interviews. Any objective voter could discern that she wasn't ready for primetime.

It's funny; I remember a big deal being made about the "Democrat" vs. "Democratic" thing, and I always forget which one is better, and think about it almost every time I write it. Above is the first time I've seen it explained; Luntz is such a goofball. I remember when he urged Republicans to use "climate change," or something like that, because it was much less threatening-sounding. He's as cynical as they come.

I'm not surprised we disagree on Pelosi. For one, my views tend to be more moderate than yours in general (as I'm sure you know by now!) I think she's been a fairly partisan leader overall, and was much more supportive of Ford at the time of that vote, even though he didn't have a shot. And I'm pretty sure I know how you feel about Ford....

While I agree with bravo that Palin got some undue criticism, I have to say that Pelosi has gotten hers as well. I also have to admit, as much as I like Sarah Palin and her stated stances on some issues, that she was obviously (and still isn't, IMO) ready for the "primetime."

Sweet, incentive to continue saying Democrat often.

:)

WHen Ford was going on his helicopter tour of NY in his pathetic attempt to primary Gillibrand, I read his interview in the NY Times, and he went on and on about how all of the cab drivers and helicopter pilots and maids he ran into while they were serving him, encouraged him to run. "In fact, not one real person has told me not to run". So I immediately called his office and left a voicemail telling him that the last thing we need in the Senate is another bagman for Wall Street and that I was urging him not to run. I finished with “now you can no longer say that no real NYer has asked you not to run.” LOL

LOL; that's pretty good. Yeah - I was pretty sure I remembered you not exactly being a fan of his....
