In August, Griner was found guilty of drug possession and smuggling for traveling with less than a gram of cannabis oil, and sentenced to nine years in a Russian penal colony. During her trial, lawyers argued that she had a medical note for the cannabis oil, but it did no good. Ironically, this is the same country that found a loophole in the legal system to allow fans attending the 2018 FIFA World Cup to bring cannabis and—check this—even cocaine and heroin into the country, if they provided the proper paperwork.

I was thinking the same. Either for the revenge on USA and NATO helping Ukraine or to make a deal with them to stop helping them, or both.

We travel a lot. We never even bring alcohol into western countries, much less other places we’ve been , e.g., Vietnam. You take zero chances in countries where you’re not familiar with the culture and customs.
Additionally,we’ve been on bad terms with Russia for years now.
I sympathize with her plight but man oh man was that stupid to be carrying pot oil thru any foreign airport, especially Russia.

They were just being accommodating to a mass influx of international visitors. They woulda gotten a bad reputation for arresting all those visitors.
They certainly don’t want to be accommodating to a high profile single American.
