The good and bad of a police raid

As everyone here knows, i'm extremely critical of law enforcement tactics because of the mistaken belief that most people have about all cops being so highly trained as well as the very limited accountability that police are subject to for mistakes that they make. So it's difficult for me to find out where I side on this one.

The San Diego sheriffs department has had it's sizable share of misconduct and lack of accountability in it's day to day actions and misdeeds, but I would take this moment to hope, pray, and wish well being and speedy recovery for two officers shot during the execution of a search warrant on a suspected purveyor of child porn. If the allegations are true, and I have no reason to suspect that they are not at this time, I have no sympathy for the suspect, nor do I concern myself with his self inflicted demise, but I would hope that at the end of this post, people start to take seriously the alarming frequency with which these types of 'high risk' raids are conducted on a daily basis..especially where it concerns non violent drug possession cases.

Detective Ali Perez and Sgt. Craig Johnson were reportedly shot and injured by Daniel Witczak after confronting him Tuesday afternoon in a Lakeside apartment complex, sheriff's department authorities said. Witzcak, 30, was confronted by the deputies for allegedly keeping pornographic images of his girlfriend's children on his cell phone with the intention of selling them, according to his girlfriend.

Perez was in critical but stable condition Tuesday night, sources told NBC San Diego. He was shot at least twice with a high-powered gun, including once in the stomach. Johnson was shot in the arm and is expected to recover. Detective Perez is an 18-year veteran with the department who is assigned to the Child Abuse Unit. Sgt. Johnson is a 23-year veteran with the department who is assigned to the Santee station.

Now, on to the bad part of this. the danger that these raids present to innocent third parties should be the main deciding factor of why police should limit these raids to instances where there is absolutely no other option. Waiting an hour or day to track, follow, and arrest the suspect outside the home and in such a manner that presents much less danger to the public as a whole is and should be preferable.

The picture above is the wall of the neighbors home after the resulting shootout. Imagine the tragedy if the neighbor had children in the home and they had been killed.
