The Extreme Bias Of Florida’s New Congressional Map

Republicans have become so extreme that the only way they can win elections is to cheat. Florida only has about 36% of the voters but they control 100% of the state. The authoritarians are winning and America is losing when we can't have free and fair elections.

The Extreme Bias Of Florida’s New Congressional Map
On Thursday, the Florida Legislature finally caved to DeSantis’s wishes and passed one of his proposed congressional maps — the last major piece in the national redistricting puzzle. And befitting DeSantis’s national reputation (and ambitions), it is a dream map for partisan Republicans, single-handedly adding four new Republicans to the U.S. House of Representatives. But while DeSantis’s uncompromising insistence on maximizing Republican power may give him a nice story to tell if he runs for president, it could also be the map’s undoing in court.

Florida’s soon-to-be congressional map (it will go into effect once DeSantis signs it) creates 18 seats with a FiveThirtyEight partisan lean1 of R+5 or redder and only eight seats with a partisan lean of D+5 or bluer. (The remaining two seats fall into the “highly competitive” category between R+5 and D+5.)

Maybe Florida will stand up like NY against democrats. They lost. I can see it if there is actually a reason....

Alabama: The U.S. Supreme Court reinstated a map drawn by Republicans that a federal court had said diluted the power of Black voters.

Georgia: Powder Springs, a majority Black city drawn into a far-right Republican district, embodies the changes reshaping Georgia politics.

Maryland: Democrats redrew their map after a judge called their previous effort an “extreme gerrymander” and threw it out.

New York: The state’s highest court voided a map created by Democrats, ruling that it was unconstitutional. Here is how the redistricting battle unfolded.

North Carolina: A state court rejected a G.O.P.-drawn map as unconstitutionally partisan and substituted its own version. The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the ruling.

Ohio: The State Supreme Court is planning to hold a hearing on a new G.O.P.-friendly map sometime after the May 3 primary.

Pennsylvania: The U.S. Supreme Court allowed a map approved by a state court to stand, rejecting a request to restore lines created by Republican lawmakers.

I'm perfectly fine with standing up against Democrats...especially the wackadoodles in New York. The problem is that by acting like authoritarians to beat the Democrats, the Republicans have become authoritarians.

Do you believe "Might makes Right", Sailor? Or that the phrase "by any means necessary" includes dishonest, unAmerican or criminal actions? I do not believe in those things.

Rather than force people to do it my way or my political party's way, I believe it is better, and more American, to educate them why one way is better than another. Not through lies, fear-mongering or other bullshit, but with facts, reason and non-partisan discuss.

The irony in NY, is that they corrected the biased maps that were drawn a decade ago when Republicans controlled the Assembly.

Not sure where they found a judge to deny that action?

I don’t care who is thwarting the peoples vote

It should not stand

Letting a politician who runs in elections design the voting districts is insane

Agreed, but that's been the trend for years. It's just getting worse.

Disenfranchising the other party's voters is okay with you? Would you be okay with it if a "blue" state did this to (R) voters?

changing which district a voter is in doesn't disenfranchise anyone.......they still vote....

people move and populations change........here in Michigan people left Detroit.......should Detroit still carry as much weight as it did before its citizens left it?.....

They are doing nothing illegal. NY tried to do it to Republicans. They were so blatant even the courts shot them down.
