The Daily injustice report vol. 34

First, prosecutors released video footage of a NYPD officer brutally beating an Iraq war vet with a baton in the apartment building where the vet was staying with his mother. The officers claim the vet was taunting and threatening them but, with no audio on the surveillance footage, it sure seems more like the officers were badgering him before finally beating him down instead. The victim is not expected to testify since he’s gone missing, his family says he’s too afraid due to his PTSD.

Next, if you didn’t know, the retrial of the now-former King County Washington Deputy Paul Schene has begun with jury selection today. The first trial, for a mere misdemeanor assault charge, resulted in a hung jury with one holdout against convicting the deputy for assaulting a young teenage girl in a holding cell that was caught on video. I don’t anticipate a better outcome this time around either, at least if we look at King County’s record for prosecuting cops. For those that haven't heard of this case or seen the video, here it is.

Now, the one lone holdout must be a serious cop lover, because there is no doubt this thug acted out and seriously abused his 'authority' over this teenage girl. If he's still acquitted, well then Seattle deserves all the boots in the face they can get.

* Jacksonville Florida has settled a wrongful death lawsuit for $200,000 to the family of an 80 year-old man who was shot to death by police when he tried to chase off undercover officers posing as drug dealers from his front lawn by displaying a gun tucked in his waistband like he had done to other drug dealers he chased off in the past.another innocent drug war victim.

* An Ottawa Hills Ohio police officer has been sentenced to 7 years in prison for felonious assault plus an additional 3 years for a gun specification after he was convicted for shooting an unarmed motorcyclist in the back during a traffic stop, leaving the man paralyzed.

* A Bal Harbour Florida police officer was sentenced to 5 years in prison and will be required to register as a sexual predator after he took a plea deal for sexually assaulting a 7-year-old girl.

* A Schenectady New York police officer has been given a 30 day suspension for assaulting a man at bar then fighting the police officers who responded thanks to a hearing officer who overruled the city’s attempt to fire the officer who has a history of misconduct.

* Baltimore Maryland has settled suit with the NAACP for $870,000 over that city’s old “quality of life” policing policy that resulted in an abnormally high percentage of false arrests partially due to quota pressures on officers to make more arrests in support of that policy.

* Two Oakland California police officers are the subject of a lawsuit over a shooting incident where the officers claim they shot an unarmed drug suspect multiple times when he allegedly attempted to run them over. However, the man’s lawyers say they have witnesses that contradict the police version of events, suggesting that the officers fired into the car without justification, severely injuring the man with shots to the chest, abdomen, forehead, groin and hands.

* An Indianapolis Indiana police officer is under investigation after he allegedly put a handcuffed suspect who wasn’t resisting into a choke hold just because he asked why he was being handcuffed. It took several other arriving police officers to pull the cop off the man and, apparently, they even complained about his behavior.

* In an update to a report we covered over the weekend, a Chattanooga Tennessee police officer is now on paid leave while he’s under investigation for trying to stop a medic from taking his wife into a hospital’s emergency room when she was exhibiting symptoms of a stroke while they were on their honeymoon. The officer then filed several felony charges against the man afterward, which were finally dismissed by the department on Tuesday, June 22. William N Grigg has a good write-up about this story and ties it in with a few other recent ones over at his Pro Libertate blog.
The husband lost his job due to the felony arrest, so once again we see how a completely insecure thug with a badge has the power of life and death over you. Law enforcement is indeed the standing army our founding fathers feared.

* A California Highway Patrol officer was convicted on bribery and perjury charges for dismissing a traffic ticket in exchange for sex.

* A Butner North Carolina police officer was fired for his role in a case where a state trooper was stopped for drunken driving but, instead of being arrested, he was given a ride to a hotel. This is the third Butner officer fired over the incident and the NC State Trooper was also fired for driving drunk.

* A Butler Wisconsin police officer was sentenced to 90 days in jail, 90 days home monitoring, and probation after being convicted for stealing drugs from someone’s home.

* An Ephrata Washington police officer was charged with possession of stolen goods and obstruction in a really convoluted case, at least as written in this article, concerning evidence, namely a theft victim’s truck and stolen parts from that truck, that ended up in his possession and how he wouldn’t give them back to the victim.

* A Pennsylvania State trooper was arrested on a simple assault charge after he allegedly assaulted his neighbor while he was doing yard work over an ongoing dispute between the two.

* A College Park Georgia police officer was fired after he was arrested on a domestic violence-related simple battery charge.

* A Kermit Texas police officer who resigned while under investigation for unspecified misconduct is now apparently the subject of a criminal investigation by the Texas Rangers.

* The Chicago Illinois police chief’s claims that complaints against his police officers were down last year may be excluding complaints about excessive force and investigations that involve shooting incidents. According to this reporter’s assessment, those complaints were up over that same period of time.someone explain to me how that happens

* The New York NY police department is being sued sued by a former detective who says he was labled a rat and forced to retire after he filed a complaint against another detective who tried to make him take the fall for his mistake.

* The police chief of Valders Wisconsin is accused of ignoring reported death threats against a gay high school student and then blaming the death threats on that student later.

* And finally, A Hancock County Indiana deputy was suspended for 10 days without pay for reckless driving after residents complained about him driving 90mph through a town on his way to an accident scene.
