The Daily injustice report vol. 29

* A Newark New Jersey police Narcotics Enforcement Team officer is under investigation for allegedly hitting a suspect who was fleeing on foot with his unmarked cruiser, sending him to the hospital with unspecified injuries.

* A Daytona Beach Florida police officer with a history of eleven excessive force complaints within 15 months is complaining about being forced to resign when video released by the department contradicted his report about his use of force on a suspect he said was kicking him.

* A Grant County Wisconsin deputy has resigned while he was under investigation for alleged sexual misconduct involving a 15-year-old female high school student.

* A Rock County Wisconsin deputy was arrested on child abuse charges for allegedly injuring his 4-year-old daughter. Police say the injuries weren’t serious, but there was visible bruising.

* The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals handed down yet another strange ruling that grants police in Washington state exceptional freedom in how they treat the public. The case involved a man who sued Spokane Washington police for strip-searching him in his home in front of a female police officer while humiliating him by making disparaging remarks about his anatomy… and the court ruled that there’s nothing wrong with that. You might recall that not too long ago this same court ruled that Seattle WA police were right to taser a pregnant woman for a non-arrestable violation who wasn’t posing an active threat. So, apparently, police in Washington can taser you even when they aren’t going to arrest you and they can strip search you while psychologically humiliating you in front of the opposite sex… and since these rulings were made on appeals, they are now standing precedents… Welcome to America.slow steady steps to tyranny and oppression.

* An Oceanside California police officer has been sentenced to one year in jail for receiving stolen goods from his embezzling girlfriend who said he knew that the gifts she gave him were bought with stolen funds.

* An Indiana State trooper is on desk duty while he’s under investigation for an alleged hit and run accident where he backed into two motorcycles before speeding off with lights flashing in his unmarked SUV outside of a nightclub.

* Milwaukee Wisconsin has settled two lawsuits against police officers and paid off a third they were forced to rehire after firing him when he was implicated in a sting operation against another cop but never charged.

* One case was settled for $75,000 to a man who recorded a police officer shaking him down for guns while he was on parole. That officer later plead guilty to charges related to that case.

* Another suit was settled for $20,000 alleging violations of the first amendment when police shut down a gay arts group’s play for not having a license when they didn’t need one.

* And a third settlement was paid out to a cop who was forced to be rehired by a court ruling with $220k in back pay and $75k to cover his attorney fees.

* An Anchorage Kentucky police officer is under investigation after a racist mass-email was sent out to at least 75 government employees in various agencies from his network account, at least one of which forwarded it to the press.

* An Albany Georgia police captain’s disciplinary suspension was reduced from 30 days to 5 days for allegedly dumping confidential documents that contained social security numbers for several police officers and civilians in an alley.

* A Doraville Georgia police captain with a history of misconduct that included one case that forced him to resign from the state police has been suspended with pay while he’s under investigation for an unspecified misconduct allegation.

* A Cincinnati Ohio police officer is on paid leave after he was arrested on assault and domestic assault charges for an alleged physical altercation he had with two women. The women in this case were also arrested though.

* Two Dallas Texas police officers were suspended for 20 days, one was recommended for demotion, and a fourth is still facing a disciplinary hearing for violating that department’s policies regarding performing second jobs while on-duty… or what some departments call “double-dipping”.

* A newly-hired Walla Walla County Washington deputy is no longer a deputy after he apparently discharged his firearm inside his home while he was “handling it”. Nobody was hurt though the round did go through a few walls.

* Prosecutors in Frederick Maryland have dropped 9 drug-related cases and a tenth is under review while an officer who took part in those cases is under investigation on allegations of perjury when her testimony was contradicted at trial.

* Finally, just as the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Citizen Police Review Board appeared set to force the Pittsburgh Police Department to release actual readable reports regarding arrests during the G20 protests the city council turned around and tried to block them with a resolution asking them to wait until after all the lawsuits expected against the police to end before they review it… Why? Because the city is trying to do anything it can to hamper those lawsuits of course. No other reason.

Remember folks, there’s a reason why we recommend that you don’t file complaints with the police for police misconduct without talking to a lawyer first, because many cities out there respond to complaints by starting to build a defense against lawsuits and sometimes that include covering up the facts.
