Bill Clinton's guests in the Lincoln Bedroom gave a total of at least $5.4 million to the Democratic National Committee during 1995 and 1996.
- The New York Times reported that some Democrat fund-raisers say they explicitly sold invitations to White House coffees, arranging invitations for $50,000 to $100,000.
- Party leaders allowed officials to entice wealthy prospective donors by asking for contributions in exchange for putting their names on White House guest lists, the Times reported.
- "I think it is fair to say that there was an understanding that if we became a trustee member [a member of the Democrat National Committee's managing trustees program], there was going to be an invitation to a White House coffee," Thomas J. Tauke, a Nynex Corp. executive, told the newspaper.
- The White House's coffee get-togethers were a lucrative part of Democrat fund-raising last year. Documents released by the White House show that the campaign projected that one hastily scheduled meeting could bring in $500,000. Another of the coffees was projected to raise $350,000.
