The ascent of right wing populism

Gary Younge is a Corbyn supporter and very much on the hard Left of British politics. Having said that, I like the guy but he is a typical Guardianista, as they used to say up North about vacuous women: "she's all furcoat and no knickers"
He didn't appear to be vacuous to me and I found his analysis to be cogent and quite accurate. That the rise of right wing populism is a sign of democracy in crises and that we do have a situation where large corporations are above the law and more powerful than national governments.

It's a questions I've asked quite a few anti-government conservatives. Why do you fear the power of government more than large corporation who, in fact, control our national government? I've never received a reasonable response to that question. The typical response has been some sort of ad hom attack.

Oh Shit! I forgot to ban Desh and the other looney tunes who will make hash out of this thread. Well, lets enjoy an intelligent chat while we can Tom, Wacko.

I fear both, but then unlike you I've seen socialism and Communism first hand as well.

Oh don't give me that. I have too. I'm not that much younger than you are nor am I an advocate of either, in most cases. Though I argue that there is a time and place for socialism when free markets fail to provide essential services I'm totally opposed to command economies of all types.

In other words, I fear both too. I mean by the standards of left wing politics in Europe I'm a freaken brown shirted, jack booted, storm trooping Nazi.

I've read dozens of articles on the rise of Trump and the reasons behind it so the interest in listening to a video with no background on the person isn't there.

I don't see it as an either or that you have to fear government or big corporations. We've seen through history what autocratic and all powerful governments can do to their people. Hence the beauty of the constitution.

The rise of Trump isn't predicated on making big corporations more powerful though.

Well let's see!! I first went to Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Russia and Romania in 1991-2.

A good analysis of the Trump phenomena and what drives frustrated right wing towards him. Everything Younge said was accurate, my only criticism might be that it was not complete.

large corporations only control our national government when Democrats have the majority of power in Washington DC
