I think what we are seeing here is the GOP attempting to pull an end run around what is going to be the eventual question of all their candidates: Can you support Donald Trump as your Presidential candidate?
If they respond, yes, they will be identified in the media as a Trump loyalist, and if they reply no, they chance losing the base, a danger in a primary. The “we will wait to see who the nominee is” deflection won’t apply here given Trump’s baggage and dislike by Independents/women voters
The pledge is just an attempted escape clause, they know full well Trump will sign it and if he decides later, quickly disregard it if such benefits him. All to protect the others
