Thai court jails man for 28 years over monarchy comments

The Chiang Rai court ruled that the 27-year-old had violated Thailand's law on royal defamation in 14 of 27 internet posts. Hundreds have been arrested under the law since mass protests in 2020.


The court found that the 27-year-old violated the lese majeste law in 14 of 27 posts for which he was arrested in August. It found that the other posts did not violate the law as they were related to the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej or did not mention a specific royal figure.

The man's lawyer told the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency that the original prison sentence of 42 years was reduced following Mongkol's testimony.

Mongkol's lawyer said his client intended to lodge an appeal. The court granted the activist bail of 300,000 baht ($9,100, €8,370) while his case is on appeal.

Mongkol also faces a third royal defamation charge over online posts from last year. He is set to return to court in March.

Nope not a happy place for an expat , Royal Thai police are keeping a close eye on them , as Thailand becomes closer to China their surveillance state will become stronger I'm sure some Thai's will turn in farangs' overheard talking about the King

I have a friend who worked there in finance. Didn't have a complaint, but he stays in the US now.

What is forbidden in Thailand?

1) It's illegal to leave the house without your underwear on. 2) It's a crime to step on any Thai currency. 3) It's a punishable offence to throw (used) chewing gum on the pavement. 4) You mustn't drive a car shirtless. 5) It's a criminal offence to be critical of the king or other members of the Thai royal family.

It is extraordinary that any resident of Thailand would have the nerve to complain about Putin's authoritarianism.
 
In the future 28 year sentences will be rare, as that is going to be considered too much consumption of planetary resources for no purpose. Those who cause disturbances in the solidarity will in the norm be exterminated.
