Workers at Tennessee Volkswagen factory reject United Auto Workers union

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Workers at a Volkswagen factory in Tennessee have voted against union representation, a devastating loss that derails the United Auto Workers union's effort to organize Southern factories.

The 712-626 vote released late Friday stunned many labor experts who expected a UAW win because Volkswagen tacitly endorsed the union and even allowed organizers into the Chattanooga factory to make sales pitches.

The UAW for decades has tried without success to organize a foreign-owned plant in a region that's wary of organized labor. The loss now makes it even harder for the union to recruit members at another Southern factory.

"If they can't win this one, what can they win?" asked Art Schwartz, a former General Motors labor negotiator who now is a consultant in Ann Arbor, Mich.

UAW President Bob King, in a 2011 speech to workers, said the union has no long-term future if it can't organize the Southern plants.

Hey Racist X I don't give a rats ass. I get a kick that you southern morons make about half of what I do.

I'm glad the vote went down that way. Why should VW have to pay such poorly educated mouth breathers a living wage when they're not even half as productive as their better educated Northern counterparts? Hell one Captain Billy could do the job of about 8 to 10 southern boys...and that's when he's been drinking! LOL

Proof the Southern rednecks are smarter than the dunces in Michigan and Ohio. They believe that keeping jobs here in America is more important than political anti-capitalist Marxist union thuggery.

I am dissapointed the vote was as close as it was.

:rofl2:

We saw how those educated northerns worked so well for you, did you forgot the goverment had to bail out GM. Take a look at the city of Detroit, how's that bankruptcy working out.

Are private-sector unions dead in the USA?

The loss capped a sprint finish to a long race and was particularly surprising for UAW supporters, because Volkswagen had allowed the union access to the factory and officially stayed neutral on the vote, while other manufacturers have been hostile to organized labor.

UAW spent more than two years organizing and then called a snap election in an agreement with VW. German union IG Metall worked with the UAW to pressure VW to open its doors to organizers, but anti-union forces dropped a bombshell after the first of three days of voting.

Republican U.S. Senator Bob Corker, the former mayor of Chattanooga who helped win the VW plant, said on Wednesday after the first day of voting that VW would expand the factory if the union was rejected.

"Needless to say, I am thrilled," Corker said in a statement after the results were disclosed.

They dont care for outsiders attempting to bully them. And it was pointless given it being a right to work state. Most foolish of the UAW to invest too much publicity into this. Of course foolish is what they do best.
