Ted Williams, 'man with golden voice,' bolts from Texas rehab

Against doctors' advice, The Other Ted Williams has checked himself out of a South Texas rehab clinic less than two weeks after TV's "Dr. Phil" announced that the "man with the golden voice" would try to kick his drug-and-alcohol dependency.

Williams, the 53-year-old former radio announcer who had been homeless, left the Origins Recovery Center, on South Padre Island, yesterday and headed to the airport, destination unknown. He became a media sensation earlier this month while panhandling at a highway exit in Columbus, Ohio. A videographer posted a clip of his mellifluous baritone, leading to job offers, an appearance on the Today and a reunion with his mother.

Then, two weeks ago, he and his daughter were detained briefly by Los Angeles police after a loud argument at a Hollywood hotel. That prompted a talk with "Dr. Phil" McGraw, who persuaded Williams to enter rehab Jan. 12.

In a statement on Williams' departure from the clinic, McGraw noted that "the decision to remain in treatment, is Ted's to make."

sheeesh, i hope he is not going to throw everything away

I can't imagine what would make me do that when I could be making a ton as the voice of the new Oprah Winfrey Network. Seriously, that addiction stuff must be harder than diamonds to throw off when you can live a life of luxury based solely on being a freak of nature.

Addiction cannot be kicked by another persons desire-only from the addicts. Williams did not want sobriety bad enough...his bottom had not been reached.

You could tell on his last Dr. Phil stint this guy isn't done and he was on the frickin' phone from the rehab! He's been around recovery long enough to say just the right things to get what he wants.

This dude is a Master Manipulator. An addict's full time job.

He's FOS and Dr. Phil knows it, but the story sells ratings after all.

admitting that you have an addiction and doing something about it are two different things

addiction is a medical problem, but patient has to want to do it

Q: How many shrinks does it take to change a lightbulb?

A: One, but the light bulb has got to want to change.

It's a truly horrible disease. I lost a lot of good friends during the crack epidemic of the late 80's and early 90's.
