Syrian warplanes took off from an air base which was hit by U.S. cruise missiles on Friday, and carried out air strikes on rebel-held areas in the eastern Homs countryside, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.


The U.S. Navy had fired dozens of missiles at the air base near Homs city in response to a chemical attack this week which Washington and its allies blamed on the Damascus government.


The British-based Observatory, a group monitoring the Syrian war using sources on the ground, said eight people had been killed in the U.S. attack.


The extent of the damage to the Shayrat air base was not entirely clear, but the Syrian warplanes had "done the impossible" in order to continue using it for sorties, the Observatory told Reuters.

59 missiles and they didn't even make it non-operational?
 
The specific purpose of the strike was to deter Assad from dumping more chemical gas, not to start WW3. They avoided the air strips because they could be easily and quickly replaced. They strategically spent the missiles and went for some shelters and buildings at the air base.

it can't refuel, maintainence, crew quarters, supply, or much more then ferry in some planes
after these are flown..

Still..it's amazing 59 Tomahawks didn't level the place
 
Putin, Assad and Trump probably pre-arranged it so that the only planes on the base during the attack were old, inoperable junk.

Probably had their actual current Air Force fighters stashed safely away somewhere else prior to Putin giving Trump the go ahead for their fake, propaganda publicity stunt.

You mean they missed. Russia claims only 23 of the 59 hit anything.

With $60 million in explosives, they could have made that airstrip virtually unusable for quite some time. And taken out the communications equip.

Russia knew it was coming and so did Syria. They pulled their good jets out into the grass where we passed over them. Anything that was left to burn was probably inoperable, at the moment or permanently. Why else would they leave them there to burn?
