Supreme Court rebukes conservatives

The Supreme Court refused Monday to change the way state and municipal voting districts are drawn, denying an effort by conservatives that could have increased the number of rural, mostly white districts at the expense of urban, largely Hispanic ones.

The "one person, one vote" case was among the most consequential of the high court's term, and once again the court's liberal wing won out. The ruling left intact Texas' method -- followed by all states -- of drawing districts with roughly equal numbers of residents.

Challengers had argued only eligible voters should be counted, a method that would have allowed states to ignore non-citizens and others who do not vote, including children. In most cases, that would have helped Republican candidates and hurt Democrats.

If the court had ruled that districts should be based on eligible voters rather than total population, states with large numbers of non-citizens would have seen the biggest change -- Texas, California, New York, New Jersey, Arizona and Nevada among them. Cities such as Chicago and Miami also would be affected.

Six justices signed on to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's decision, and Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas -- the most conservative members of the court -- concurred in the judgment.

The equal protection clause of the Constitution is supposed to guarantee each person the same political power.

[A unanimous Supreme Court ruled Monday that illegal immigrants and other non-citizens can be counted when states draw their legislative districts, shooting down a challenge by Texas residents who said their own voting power was being diluted. The ruling does not grant non-citizens power to vote, but says the principle of “one person, one vote” doesn’t require localities to only count those who are actually eligible to vote. Because of illegal immigrants, other non-citizens and children under 18 years of age, state legislative districts in Texas can vary by as much as 40 percent.

Conservatives from Texas wanted to have their cake and eat it too. They wanted to have more apportioned seats from counting illegal immigrants in the census, but to actually draw those districts in a way that only took into account conservative whites (in addition to their current scheme of massively gerrymandering the seats in their favor). They got shut the fuck down.

Since the country stupidly provides illegals with welfare this is the only outcome as this has as much to do with allocation of fed money as anything else.

A lie.

Undocumented immigrants do not qualify for welfare, food stamps, Medicaid, and most other public benefits.

Most of these programs require proof of legal immigration status and under the 1996 welfare law, even legal immigrants cannot receive these benefits until they have been in the United States for more than five years.
