Sturgeon accuses May of ignoring Scotland in Brexit talks

UK and Scottish leaders have clashed over the role of the Edinburgh parliament in the upcoming Brexit negotiations, raising the possibility of a Scottish legal challenge to Britain’s exit from the European Union.

Scotland’s first minister Nicola Sturgeon accused her UK counterpart Theresa May of overlooking Scotland after the prime minister said that only the Westminster government would have a say on Brexit.

Speaking at the Conservative party conference last weekend, Ms May said that Scotland would leave the EU along with the rest of the United Kingdom. There will be “no opt-out from Brexit”, the Tory leader said.

Confirmation that the devolved parliament at Holyrood in Edinburgh will have no veto over the terms of Brexit prompted anger from Scottish nationalists. Some senior Scottish National Party figures have suggested that Holyrood could block the so-called “Great Repeal Bill”, the legislation that will remove the European Communities Act 1972 from statute books, starting the UK’s exit from the EU.

Scots overwhelmingly backed staying in the EU in June. In the immediate aftermath of that vote, Ms Sturgeon warned that a second Scottish independence referendum was “highly likely”.

On Sunday, Ms Sturgeon accused Ms May of “going out of her way to say that Scotland’s voice and interests don’t matter”.

Scotland deserves a veto! No Brexit without the consent of all constituent nations!
You are just being an arsehole here, if you claim to know anything about the UK then you wouldn't spout such crap. Does Mississippi have a veto over federal matters?? Scotland doesn't have any role in the Brexit negotiations, those powers are abrogated to the UK government, and they can bitch and moan as much as they like as indeed can you.

You're going to tear apart your nation. Scotland is an abused partner in your federation. You just stamp over them all you like. Scotland should be an equal partner to England, you shouldn't treat them like your dog.

The population of Scotland is just over 5 million, less than 8% of the UK total. It truly depresses me just how little you understand, despite all your assertions to the contrary. Let me ask you this question. The US has been attempting to negotiate the TTIP trade deal with the EU for sometime now, how much input did Mississippi have?

Stocks down, pound down, Spain wanting them to pay for their citizens living in Spain's healthcare!

So 50% in a referendum and you'd agree to repeal the second amendment forever?

kinda how democracy works. What you would do is get a another referendum down the line asking for a new ammendment for guns when you feel that the country supports you again.

If scotland feels that the UK would like to join the EU again in the future then it can push for a referendum to join. Leave won so that must be done first unless you cn prove they cheated or something. Joining again if thats what you want, would be for the future.

i would disregard all those arguments and just boil everything down to one that everyone can agree with. The precedent of asking for a do over whenever an election or vote does not go your way is a terrible one to set.

interesting. So scotland should have an equal say. I take this to mean that you are also in favor of all states having equal electoral votes? After all Nebraska should be an equal partner to california correct?

The FTSE 100 is at an all time high, stop making shit up!! Spain is in no position to demand anything, their infrastructure was bought and paid for by the UK and Germany.

Their economy would really be down the crapper without all the ex-pat Brits living there. Let's see how long they'd last if we Brits boycotted their tourist industry and starting imposing work permits on young Spanish who want to work here because youth unemployment is so bloody high (44%) in Spain. All you are doing here is demonstrating just how little you Yanks know about the EU, the UK and Europe.

It was revealed recently that Scotland's share of the oil revenues amounted to around £60 million. Down from a figure of several billion when the oil price was $100 per barrel. If they were independent, the deficit would be over 10% of GDP or even more than Greece. When will you Americans learn that the Jocks love whining, it's a national sport. P G Wodehouse got it right when he said. "It has never been hard to tell the difference between a Scotsman with a grievance and a ray of sunshine".

Scotland - and Northern Ireland - are countries of the UK, and clearly should be allowed to remain in the EU if they so choose if the English Government decides not accept a veto and enforce the will of another such UK country. As for my own country, the mugs managed to perform a sort of double suicide, though, fair play, those who retain our language also retained some sense.

The EU has made it very plain that Scotland will have to leave the EU, as it is part of the UK and therefore not legally recognised as a separate country. If they want to call a new referendum in the future then they can, if they win they will have to reapply for EU membership which will be vetoed by Spain and Belgium. Those are the harsh realities, anything else is just fanciful rubbish concocted by idiots who should know better.
