Franco Harris, the Hall of Fame running back whose heads-up thinking authored the "Immaculate Reception," considered the most iconic play in NFL history, has died. He was 72.

Harris' son, Dok, told The Associated Press his father died overnight. No cause of death was given.

His death comes two days before the 50th anniversary of the play that provided the jolt that helped transform the Pittsburgh Steelers from also-rans into NFL elite and three days before the team is scheduled to retire his No. 32 during a ceremony at halftime of its game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

The Steelers announced back in September, they intend to retire his number 32 on Christmas Eve during a scheduled Halftime ceremony just for him..

Even though the Steelers have never let anyone use the number since Franco left, it becomes a bit of irony now that Franco won't be here to see the celebration- JUST 3 DAYS AFTER HE PASSED AWAY!

Franco reminds me of the era of the Fullback! Every team had one, and everyone of them were STAR FRANCHISE great players. I wish they would bring the position back!

Fullbacks were some of the most explosive exiting players to watch that ever played football!

RIP Franco! We loved you man!:(
