So much for free speech

More mountains out molehills....

Hank Williams Jr., the voice famous asking millions of football fans whether they’re ready for some football, has been pulled from tonight’s broadcast of “Monday Night Football” over a comment he made on Fox News this morning.
Williams, who sings the lead-in song to the game each week, criticized the president for his golf summit with House Speaker John Boehner this summer.

“It would be like Hitler playing golf with (Israeli leader) Benjamin Netanyahu,” Williams told “Fox & Friends.”

USA Today, among others, picked up the quote, speculating on whether the comparison would get Williams booted from the broadcast.
This afternoon, ESPN released a statement to the affirmative:
“While Hank Williams, Jr. is not an ESPN employee, we recognize that he is closely linked to our company through the open to Monday Night Football. We are extremely disappointed with his comments, and as a result we have decided to pull the open from tonight’s telecast.”

Conservatives with short memories would do well to remember the histrionics they subjected the country to after the Dixie Chicks had the temerity to make a comment about President Bush during one of their shows.

"Musicians have no business spouting political views"...they wailed, and all across the country, radio stations banned Dixie Chicks songs in retaliation.

I don't understand what his quote was supposed to mean? Who is he calling Hitler? Obama? And Boehner is Netanyahu? Is he a rightie because I have noticed they often speak as if they have suffered a recent brain catastrophe?

Anyway, who cares? How is this a free speech issue? Try telling your boss that he's a moron who should be jumping around in a cage with the other orangutans and let me know what happens. (or get someone you know who actually has a job to do it) The first amendment doesn't protect you from being fired because you say something your employer deems offensive, sorry. I really wish you righties would show some respect for the Founders and actually learn the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Do you think ESPN should have pulled the intro?

You righties get soooooooo confused about free speech.

Hank Williams is representing an employer. That employer didn't like what he was saying.

Williams is not an ESPN employee. Espn can do what they feel like within the contractual agreements they have with williams. Espn is not the government.

That song was fucking obnoxious anyway. Hopefully Faith Hill says Obama eats aborted babies or something so we don't have to hear the Sunday Night Football song anymore either.

according to the government you can have free speech within limits, i.e., you cannot yell fire in a crowded theater

your employer has no such limits regarding free speech of employees unless they are contractual, so watch what you say if you are employed

Just for a little perspective. Let's always remember how the white wing pissy pant whiners act when they are holding power over others:
