Should Facebook Be Regulated?

Diversity Makes Greatness
Facebook has become a significant part of our society.

It has become increasingly apparent there are negative consequences to social media platforms.

Not long after radio and TV became significant parts of our society we saw cause to regulate them.

Facebook has now become prominent news because it was used by Cambridge Analytica to influence the 2016 Presidential Election.

It has recently launched a program targeting children in the 6-12 age range.

Is this something we should be concerned about as a nation?

Five things the world finally realizes about Facebook:

"1. Your Facebook profile hasn’t stayed on Facebook.

2. Facebook has made giving away your personal data easier.

3. If a company breaches Facebook’s guidelines, there’s little recourse.

4. Facebook’s political targeting allowed global election manipulation.

5. Privacy still matters, even on the internet."

Is it time for us to consider regulating Facebook and other social media platforms?

ANYONE who wants his/her "privacy" ought never to post a single word on the Internet.

There should be a law passed that codifies that: Anyone who posts anything on the Internet gives up ALL rights to the privacy of that information.

Fact is it should be expanded.

ANYONE who uses the Internet for commerce gives up ALL rights to privacy of that use.

ANYONE who thinks there should be laws regulating any of those things...

...should be arguing for laws that regulate hurricanes and earthquakes.

The sooner everyone realized that...the sooner we will get past the concerns about it.

I think there should be some regulation.

Children see others doing something they want to do it too.

That doesn't mean children have any idea what they are getting into.

So you're cool with me having your bank account and spending data?

Facebook should be broken apart as should google. The ad service of facebook allows them to take far more information than the users knowingly consent to. Google is even worse now that they own youtube and had even a more aggressive ad service than even facebook and have a browser on top all that.

Agreed.

Hi Frank,

Looks like we are going to be on opposite sides of this one...

We are.

We are going to be even further apart when I mention that I think the notion we have had about personal privacy...

...no longer exists.

There are CCTV all over...our cell phones are too easy to track...satellite dishes can track us...ANYTHING POSTED ON THE INTERNET SHOULD HAVE NO EXPECTATION WHATEVER OF PRIVACY.

So...I suspect not only are we on opposite sides...I suspect I am in the MINORITY on this one.

So you're cool with me having your bank account and spending data?

Sure...why not. If you can get it...go for it.

You can also check out the porn sites I visit...or the music I listen to...and videos I watch if you want.

I have decided to have an on-line Internet presence...and have given up any expectations that I also have privacy. I suspect all of you haves also give up expectations of privacy...although many of you don't yet realize it.

I am in agreement with you there. It's hard to go anywhere or do anything in a city without being on camera. But there is a reassurance in the realization that it is impossible to have all that material reviewed and real-time monitored. Mostly, it is never looked at simply because there is too much, and it would take too long, and who is going to pay people to do that?

There are CCTV all over...our cell phones are too easy to track...satellite dishes can track us...ANYTHING POSTED ON THE INTERNET SHOULD HAVE NO EXPECTATION WHATEVER OF PRIVACY.

We're talking about different things here. Surveillance cameras are one thing. Dishes are another. The internet is yet another.

So...I suspect not only are we on opposite sides...I suspect I am in the MINORITY on this one.

I don't know about that. I was quite surprised when FB became so popular. Baffled me why people would voluntarily put their personal information out there for all to see. Since FB is so popular there will be a lot of people who think the government has no business trying to control FB.

If FB helped Trump get elected, is it unreasonable to expect Trump supporters to support FB against the government?

Thats the dumbest fucking thing I've ever heard. Engaging in commerce does not remove ones right to privacy or anything else for that matter. Only a fool would think otherwise.

Every site that monitors and collect info should be regulated. My android is tuned into Google Maps and it tracks me even when I'm not using the app. I get popups asking me to rate a restaurant or business I am at. If I want to take a pic with the camera, it pinpoints the location, including the name of the business if I am at one. I was never asked to nor did I give permission. I had to agree to terms of service to get my phone and apps to work.

and they should have to disclose it. I downloaded my FB data. There is no way in hell the few things it showed was even close to all the data they collect. IIRC it had my email, DOB, join date and a few dates I authorized a couple apps when I had been on it for years and had a trillion posts on walls, groups and such.

Regulation by the government is the worse idea!

Perhaps go into 'settings' on you phone and turn off 'Location.'

That is the feature which tells all the apps where you are located.
