At about 6:00 AM Eastern Port Au Prince was struck by a second quake reported as 6.1 on the Richter Scale....

People fled into the streets from the few still-standing buildings.

Aftershocks suck, even if 1/10 of the strength of the original. Hopefully everything that's down has already been down.

Its a good think 6.1 is not an enormously powerful blast, but its impact will be magnified under the turmoil that currently exists there.

The Richter Scale isn't the only criteria when judging the power of an earthquake. Remember that this series of quakes were close to the surface, geologically speaking.

6.1 is a pretty good shake. The Earthquakes that I experienced were 6.5 and 7 on the scale and both damaged buildings that were built to withstand them and wrecked infrastructure in the US, let alone Port au Prince.

Yeah, I was thinking of the 6.8 that struck the Seattle area in 2001 (as punishment to Seattleites for the previous day), and it really was not a huge deal, and the only thing over 4.5 that I've ever experienced.

But someone reminded me earlier that, even on a good day, there is a world of difference between what American infrastructure can withstand and what Haitian infrastructure can stand.
