Sean Penn Wants His Gay Day

Sean Penn, fresh from his Academy Award win as the lead in "Milk," will headline alongside State Sen. Mark Leno, D-SF, activist Cleve Jones, Geoff Kors, executive director of Equality California, and friends and family of the late San Francisco supervisor on Tuesday, in a push for an official Harvey Milk Day in California.

The bill would designate May 22 as "a day of special significance in California," in which public schools would be encouraged "to conduct suitable commemorative exercises on Harvey Milk's life and his contributions to the state," according to the press release.

But with the huge hole in the state budget and increased calls to cut back current paid state holidays, supporters also note the legislation doesn't call for either state workers or school employees to get a day off from work.

LOL

California already had enough useless holidays, MLK, Ceasar Chavez, and Columbus Day, whats one more.

Why all of California?

If I remember correctly having lived in the SF Bay Area at the time, Harvey Milk was nothing more than a San Francisco elected supervisor. He was basically unknown outside San Francisco and his native New York until that fateful day when he was assassinated with Mayor Moscone.

I can see a special commemorative day in San Francisco if they want to do so, but why the hell would Redding, Ca or San Diego, Ca or Sacramento, Ca or any other city in California celebrate the life of Harvey Milk?

Immie

Because Sean Penn made a movie and the good citizens of California kicked the gays to the curb with the passage of Prop. 8.
