Police investigating the financial affairs of the Scottish National Party yesterday arrested Peter Murrell, the party’s former chief executive, who resigned last month after holding the post since 1999. Mr Murrell is the husband of Nicola Sturgeon, former First Minister of Scotland, who resigned in February.

Detectives mounted a search of the couple’s Glasgow home. A large tent was erected over the front door, and police searched their garden. At least six police vehicles were parked outside SNP HQ in Edinburgh, and officers carrying crates and other equipment were seen going inside.

Questions have been raised about the use of funds donated to the party for a fresh independence referendum campaign. Former party treasurer Douglas Chapman resigned last year, saying he had not been given the "financial information" to do the job. The SNP has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing during the months-long police inquiry.

A police statement said: “A 58-year-old man who was arrested in connection with the ongoing investigation into the funding and finances of the Scottish National party has been released without charge pending further investigation.”
