The kingdom, locked in a tussle for influence with Iran across the Middle East and beyond, is stepping up plans to develop a nuclear energy capability

Saudi Arabia will develop a nuclear bomb if its arch-rival Iran does so, the kingdom's 32-year-old crown prince said in a preview of a television interview released on Thursday.

"SaudiArabia does not want to acquire any nuclear bomb, but without a doubt if Iran developed a nuclear bomb, we will follow suit as soon as possible," Prince Mohammed bin Salman told CBS in an interview that will air on Sunday.

Iran is not developing a nuclear weapon, but living by the terms of the agreement established with the UN. However, in May, should Trump choose to cancel our end of the agreement, then all bets are off, and Iran just may pick up their nuclear program where they left off.

This isn't news.. The Saudis have said that for the past decade.

You have absolutely no basis to state that, Iran has all the elements in place to build a nuclear weapon. I am also damned sure Russia or North Korea would help out as well.

This is news though!!

The United States, South Korea, Russia, France and China are bidding on a multi-billion dollar tender to build Saudi Arabia's first two nuclear reactors.

The world's top oil exporter has previously said it wants nuclear technology only for peaceful uses but has left unclear whether it also wants to enrich uranium to produce nuclear fuel, a process which can also be used in the production of atomic weapons.

The government approved a national policy for its atomic energy programme on Tuesday, including limiting all nuclear activities to peaceful purposes, within the limits defined by international treaties.

Reactors need uranium enriched to around five percent purity but the same technology in this process can also be used to enrich the heavy metal to a higher, weapons-grade level. This has been at the heart of Western and regional concerns over the nuclear work of Iran, Saudi Arabia’s arch-rival which enriches uranium domestically

No basis to state what?

That Iran is living p to the terms of their disarmament agreement
or the Trump wants to cancel this agreement in May
or that Iran would then be free to continue their nuclear development?

Sorry but a Florida hausfrau is not likely to be in the best position to determine Iranian compliance.

That's not news either.. KSA wants nuclear power driven desalination that will also produce electricity.. That has been the plan for 20 years.

Holy crap, you just love this! Did they put out the bids for tender 20 years ago?

There is not a single piece of evidence that Iran has not fully complied with the terms of this agreement. If there is, please post it.

The Saudis plan for the long term.. They have since I was a girl.. They have known and discussed their intention for nuclear powered desalination and power production since the early 1980s... and since 1982 they have developed several off grid solar driven villages.. More recently the have launched the Farasan island solar facility.

I toured the projects and Kaust 20 years ago..

You are very adept at avoiding answering questions, should have been a politician. So how many nuclear reactors are there in the KSA now?

None yet.. Have you seen any of the desalination plants in KSA? They have partnered with the Germans since 1980..

Yes I know, the Germans are pioneers in reverse osmosis technology.

Saudis don't use reverse osmosis.. Its a poor technology that is more suited to brackish water than sea water.. and it does nothing to get rid of ecoli and heavy metals that plague the hydrology of the Jordan Basin.

Hmm, apparently this company was unaware of that, maybe you should tell them they are wasting their time?

They have about 30 desalination plants the last time I looked.. a few of them use a combination of desalination and reverse osmosis, but that is not the thrust of their efforts.. and, they don't have the issues associated with the hydrology of the Jordan Basin.
