Saudi Arabia's powerful Crown Prince on Tuesday vowed to restore 'moderate, open' Islam, breaking with ultra-conservative clerics in favour of an image catering to foreign investors and Saudi youth.

'We are returning to what we were before - a country of moderate Islam that is open to all religions and to the world,' Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said at an economic forum in Riyadh.

'We will not spend the next 30 years of our lives dealing with destructive ideas. We will destroy them today,' the 32-year-old, who was appointed Crown Prince in June, added. 'We will end extremism very soon.'

Saudi Arabia has recently started to loosen its ultra-conservative rules, including allowing women to drive and hosting a mixed-gender national day. But it has long been blamed for backing terror organisations around the world.

Not since it became 'Saudi Arabia' -- a nation literally named after a corrupt royal family, and which survives in part by their alliance with Wahhabi psychos who are allowed to preach terrorism in the heart of Mecca.

Under Ottoman rule, the Middle East WAS relatively moderate. There was a time when they far outpaced Christianity as a moderate religion. As long as you paid your taxes, Muslims, Christians, and Jews lived side-by-side in peace.

Yeah, they never were. A lot of Arab nations went through periods of secular rule, only to later undergo radicalization. The peak of secularization was around the 50's, things have been getting more and more islamist since then. But Saudi Arabia was always backwards.

Revisionist history at its worst, the Islamic Imperialists have been slaughtering Jews since Mohammad perpetrared genocide and ethnic cleansing on the Jewish Banu tribes of the Arabian peninsula and the Ottoman Empire amongst numerous other atrocities kidnapped Christian children, forced them to convert to Islam, and then used them as canon fodder in their wars of expansionist conquest.

Saudi authorities have arrested dozens of people, including prominent clerics, in what appears to be a coordinated crackdown on dissent, Human Rights Watch said today. The campaign comes three months after Mohammad bin Salman became crown prince in June 2017.

The reported arrests of Salman al-Awda, Awad al-Qarni, and more than a dozen others since September 10 are the latest in Saudi Arabia’s ongoing repression campaign against dissidents including peaceful activists, journalists, and writers. A prominent writer, Jamal Khashoggi, announced that his publication, al-Hayat, had banned him from writing regular opinion columns.

“These apparently politically motivated arrests are another sign that Mohammad bin Salman has no real interest in improving his country’s record on free speech and the rule of law,” said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director at Human Rights Watch. “Saudis’ alleged efforts to tackle extremism are all for show if all the government does is jail people for their political views.”
