Russia fast-tracks citizenship to residents in southern Ukraine
President Vladimir Putin signs a decree accelerating the process for residents in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions to acquire Russian passports and citizenship.

Russia claimed full control of the Kherson region in mid-March, and also holds parts of the Zaporizhzhia region

President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree simplifying the process for residents of Ukraine’s Russian-occupied Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions to acquire Russian citizenship and passports.

The decree marks a further step towards “Russification” of the two regions, where Moscow’s war in Ukraine has enabled it to establish a continuous land bridge linking Russia to the Crimean Peninsula, which it seized from Ukraine in 2014.

Occupied Zaporozhia and Kherson won’t return to Ukraine: Russian-backed offical

Moscow’s decision to fast track Russian citizenship for Ukrainian residents of the occupied Zaporozhia and Kherson regions means these territories will not return to Ukraine, a Moscow-installed officer of the so-called ministry of internal affairs of Zaporozhia has said.

Alexei Selivanov said residents of the occupied regions “get the opportunity to work, get an education throughout the territory of great power, register in the territory to receive all social benefits and payments,” Russia’s Tass news reports.

“This means that the Zaporozhia and Kherson regions will no longer return to Ukraine,” Selivanov added.
