Russian Warships Shelling Towns Near Odesa as Naval Activity Increases in Northern Black Sea

Russian ships are shelling targets in the suburbs of Odesa as naval activity picks up in the Black Sea, the Pentagon said on Wednesday.

“We do see increased naval activity in the northern Black Sea,” a senior defense official told reporters on Wednesday.
We also have observed on our own the shelling of some town outside of Odessa near Odessa, but not in Odessa. We believe these are… from Russian warships in the Black Sea.

The official did not say if the shelling was a precursor to an amphibious landing near the port city.

“It could be that they are preparing the way for some sort of ground assault on Odesa,” the official said.
“We would not see them surprised in taking Odesa given its strategic location.”

In Russia, celebrations of the eighth anniversary of Moscow’s seizure of Crimea from Ukraine were held in central squares in cities across the country Friday, Russian state television showed.

Putin addressed supporters at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium, which hosted the men’s World Cup final in 2018 and seats 81,000 people.

Vladimir Putin vowed to press on with his invasion of Ukraine before a crowd of tens of thousands of flag-waving supporters.

Russian television showed Mr. Putin on a stage in the center of the stadium standing against a backdrop reading, “For Russia” and “For a world without Nazism”.

“We will definitely implement all the expected plans,” Putin told the crowd to cheers and applause.

Ukraine backtracks on Mariupol theater claims
Kiev initially claimed Russian bombs had killed more than 1,000 people, but local officials now say otherwise

More than 200 civilians have been rescued unharmed from the bombed Mariupol Drama Theater, in Ukraine, and one injured woman has been taken to hospital, the local deputy mayor told reporters on Friday. Initial claims from Kiev estimated that over 1,000 people may have been killed in what they alleged was a Russian airstrike.

Ukrainian media announced on Wednesday that the Drama Theater – located on the main square of the city – had been struck by the Russian air force while civilians were sheltering inside. The declaration was widely amplified by Westerners on social media.

By Thursday morning, however, reports switched to saying that those civilians had survived, with a journalist from expat journal the Kyiv Independent calling it a “miracle.”

On Friday, Deputy Mayor Sergey Orlov told Human Rights Watch that more than 200 people have so far been rescued from the rubble unharmed, but one woman had been taken to hospital with injuries. Earlier in the day, Ukraine’s human rights commissioner, Lyudmila Denisova, told reporters that some 1,300 civilians had been trapped inside.

Meanwhile, Mayor Vadim Boychenko told the BBC that the fighting had reached the city center, where the theater is located.


Responding to the Ukrainian accusations on Wednesday, the Russian military said none of its planes had carried out any ground attacks in Mariupol that day, and the theater had not in any case been on its list of targets.
