Russian warship made 'unprofessional' maneuver

A Russian warship carried out "unprofessional" maritime operations in close proximity to a U.S. Navy ship in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, a U.S. Defense official said on Friday.

This is the second time the same Russian vessel has come within close proximity of a U.S. Navy ship this month. On June 17, the Yaroslav Mudryy came within 315 yards (288 meters) of the USS Gravely, an incident U.S. officials called "unsafe and unprofessional," but which the Russian Defense Ministry disputed.

Recent months have seen a number of similar Cold War-style incidents at sea and in the air, with each country's military accusing the other of dangerous approaches in international waters and airspace.

The U.S. Defense official, who was speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the most recent incident took place on June 30 when the Yaroslav Mudryy came unnecessarily close to the USS San Jacinto and maneuvered in it's wake.

"The closing distance by Yaroslav Mudryy before the ship turned away from San Jacinto is considered a high risk maneuver, highly unprofessional, and contrary to international maritime regulations," the official said.

The official added however, that the U.S. guided-missile cruiser was never threatened by the maneuvers.

"Conducting aggressive, erratic maneuvers and moving unnecessarily close to another ship in open ocean is inconsistent with prudent seamanship," the official said.

At the time of the incident, the San Jacinto was carrying out operations against Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria with the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, the official said.

In another incident in April, the U.S. military said Russian SU-24 bombers had simulated attack passes near the USS Donald Cook in the Baltic Sea, with one official describing them as one of the most aggressive interactions in recent memory.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said at the time that the behavior of the Russian pilots was provocative and dangerous

A Russian warship, the 4,000-ton Russian frigate Yaroslav Mudry (FF-727), approached within 315 yards of the U.S. Navy warship in the eastern Mediterranean Sea earlier this month in what U.S. officials say was a series of "unsafe maneuvers". The USS Gravely was in the Mediterranean on a routine patrol June 17 to provide protection for the aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman as part of Operation Inherent Resolve to counter ISIS. It was approached by the Project 1154 Russian Neustrashimyy-class frigate, according to U.S. officials. The Russian vessel made repeated passes behind the Gravely within its wake. At one point, the Russian ship pointed toward the Truman, the officials said. “Gravely was operating astern of Harry S. Truman, and assessed that 777 was intentionally trying to interfere with Harry S. Truman operations,” the official said, referring to the Russian frigate’s side number. The Gravely eventually accelerated speed and moved ahead, with the Russian ship still following it before breaking off.

For the first time in some years, two US Navy carrier strike groups were active at the same time in the Mediterranean Sea. On June 2, the carrier Harry S. Truman — whose escorts included the Graveley — passed northbound through the Suez Canal and, on the following day, began combat strikes against ISIS targets in Syria and Iraq. The Truman apparently has wrapped up combat operations and was in port at Souda Bay, Crete last weekend. US officials on Tuesday would not confirm the ship’s location, but she is believed to be preparing to return to the US at the end of a seven-month deployment.

The Kremlin claims that was harassed by the U.S. guided missile destroyer, while attempting to disrupt an aircraft carrier tasked with fighting ISIS. It was claimed that as the ships traveled, Mudry’s crew repeatedly warned Gravely over the radio not to get close but kept accelerating and turning into the American destroyer over the 90 minutes it was tailing the destroyer and carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75), at one point that the frigate got as close as about 300 yards.

Throughout the incident, Gravely maneuvered to stay between Mudry and Truman, the official said.

The crew of Gravely and the carrier determined the Russian frigate, “was intentionally trying to interfere with Harry S. Truman operations,” as the official said. “We have deep concerns about the unsafe and unprofessional Russian ship maneuvers. These actions have the potential to unnecessarily escalate tensions between countries, and could result in a miscalculation or accident which results in serious injury or death.”

The incident is the latest in an ongoing series of confrontational military encounters at sea and in the air, and takes place as the US has increased its naval demonstrations in the Mediterranean region.

Russian warship made 'unprofessional' maneuver

Some might see this as a very picky post generated by sour grapes at Russia's success in defending Syria and spoiling US/Israeli war plans.

Anyone who goes knocking on a bear's door can expect to meet a bear.
oh Christ. supposedly we are on the same side against ISIS - why the Truman was there.
Poland is part of NATO -just where else are they supposed to practice? It's not the bear, it's Putin's expansionism,

He has the dirt on Trump. He will be able to control him.

You are surely aware that the whole Syrian shebang was designed for ' Israel's security ' and to prise Syria away from Russia ? No ? Ah well.

NATO made pledges to the Russians following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Clearly- NATO cannot be trusted.

what "Syrian shebang" the Civil war?? It's sectarian or a reaction by Assad to the protests -whatever.
And I supported not going after Assad, unlike Obama and Hillary. At least Assad is democratically elected and not an Islamist (sic)

and Russia signed the Budapest Memorandum..I also grant US meddling in Ukranianian politics - but so has Russia.
Russia went far past meddling to annexation and defacto federalization of the east

Nah, operating vessels of that size in close proximity to each other(less than a mile)without established communications, is pretty damn reckless. And this is pretty tame in comparison to some of the other crap russia and china have pulled.

So the San Jacinto was actually attacking two sovereign states at the time, one of which contains many Russian personnel ?

Russian jets bomb US-backed Syrian rebels after US told Russia to stop

Russian Su-34 "Fullbacks" conducted the airstrikes, according to the defense official who said it was most likely a flight of two, the typical attack profile for the Russian Air Force in Syria. Su-34s are modern Russian fighter-bombers comparable to a U.S. Air Force F-15.

The Russian Air Force "had never conducted strikes" in that portion of Syria before, the official said. Al-Tanf is nestled in an area where Syria, Jordan and Iraq come together. Some of the U.S.-backed Syrian rebels were part of the Pentagon's "train and equip" program, and others were CIA-trained, the official said.

Well- I'll guess that the San Jacinto et al were particularly careful where their ordnance fell- on this occasion.
