Putin wants to shield the affluent citizens of Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and other large Russian cities from the consequences of this war, so the Russian military is hiring a lot of mercenaries, recruiting in prisons, and sending the Chechens, Buryats, Siberians, Caucasians, and Tatars in as cannon fodder.

I'm hoping that Ukraine has weeded out all of the spies. We don't hear about as many major successful Russian offensives recently.

It was predicted that Putin might take regions in the South, but not hold them. We're seeing that play out now.
