Putin thought Daffy Donald might win and then NATO would have been crippled. Trump discussed withdrawing from NATO. Trump was shooting at NATO in speech after speech. You cannot turn this around, Trump was not doing it in secret. Putin's dream would have been Trump winning and NATO ending, so He could take over whatever countries he wanted.
