As we head toward amnesty for all of the illegal immigrants who have flouted our laws since our last amnesty push under Reagan, all we hear from the democrat party is that "the GOP can't win any elections unless the GOP caves on amnesty".

So the question I have is why does the democrat party want the GOP to win any elections? Isn't the purpose of politics to make sure that the other side loses? Why would the democrat party do anything to see that the GOP wins any elections? Now some will say that they want a robust "opposition party", but I call BS on that because they get all in a kerfuffle when the GOP opposes anything.

So here is your chance libbies. I am only thread banning one particular douche tip. The rest of you have a chance to show me your mettle and provide some of that famed democrat insight you claim you have.

Having worked in the partisan offices of the Maine State Legislature, I can tell you that the system works best when reasonable folks from both sides of the aisle come together in good faith to craft sensible legislation that both sides can live with. In order to do that, there needs to be folks on both sides who ARE willing to come to the middle.

The only way Republicans ever agree to do anything is if it is in the own personal self-interest. Take any generic issue, Issue X, and if it doesn't mateially benefit Republicans in any way -- even if it doesn't hurt them -- they won't do it because it's an opportunity for them to get something that does materially benefit them. Democrats don't work that way and will do things that don't benefit them personally because doing it is the right thing to do. Sometimes they'll even do things that do not personally benefit them and actually harm them becuase it's the right thing to do. Republicans don't believe in doing the right thing for its own sake.

So on immigration, the only way you'll get Republicans to vote in favor of it is to convincing them that it is in their individual self-interest. And Democrats, being the kind of people to put their own individiual self-interest aside in the pursuit of the right thing, are more than willing to convince Republicans to do the right thing by appealing to their selfish nature even if it ends up harming Democrats.

I believe that both parties need their pure and strident voices - on the left and on the right - to stand on the far battlements holding the standard so that when the people from their side DO come towards the middle, they remember where they are coming from and what philosophical tenets they carry with them. Each side knows that they will never win every seat in whatever legislative body they are contesting, and each side knows that if they have a majority of seats in those bodies, they stand a better chance of having their key ideas and tenets contained in whatever compromises can be struck. That is why every party tries to contest every seat in every election... Striving for a majority which may not be the ultimate solution, but it sure as hell beats being in the minority.
