Trump deludes himself if he thinks Vlad was either "scared of Trump" or "was a friend to Trump". Neither were true. Vlad is a cold-blooded killer, Trump is a whiny privileged little man who wants to be a lapdog to every strongman dictator he meets. Vlad was marking time leveraging Trump's non-stop attacks on NATO to destabilize Europe's response to whatever he was planning on doing in the first place. He has had his eye on Ukraine (as all Russian leaders do) from the get-go and he was ALWAYS going to do this one way or another. Trump was only a help to Vlad.
