Last week, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador intensified his ongoing war with journalism. On Thursday, he sought to preempt the publication of an investigation by the New York Times into alleged drug money influence within his inner circle. The Times had tried to get the president on the record as to the allegations. Instead of answering, he decided to use his daily news conference to refute the claims in the then-yet-to-be-published report, and went on to divulge the private cellphone number of Natalie Kitroeff, a Times correspondent in Mexico.
