Polygamy tonight

Tonight at 10:00 pm Eastern on TLC. Everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask. :)

(Excerpt)Most people only know polygamy from what they see on TV, but there's so much more to that way of life, according to the real-life polygamist family from 'Sister Wives.'

TLC's new seven-part series (one-hour premiere Sun., Sept. 26, 10PM ET), 'Sister Wives' explores the lives of Kody Brown and his three -- soon to be four -- wives and their combined 13 -- soon to be 16 -- kids. They are fundamentalist Mormons from Utah who are fighting to legalize polygamy and stop discrimination against families like theirs and the estimated 40,000 other polygamists living in Utah.(End)

So long as they take care of all their kids I give a shit less what they do. I watched a special on discovery or one of those type of channels on some Mormons that moved to Canada and live in a very close knit community where there are many polygamous marriages. The one they focused on seemed very loving and close and dad was close with all his kids and the sister wives. I know that many of these polygamous groups prey on young girls, but I believe that if everyone is of legal age it is nobody's business. The government can tell them they can only claim one spouse, but if you have 4 baby mama's and provide for all those kids you can deduct every single one. I am looking forward to this special to see how this dynamic works.

Am I the only one who sees parallels between this and fundamentalist Islam?

Just an opinion, but these women have got to be nuts. :D

It is a commonality amongst fundamentalist to restrain women.

But aren't all cultures supposed to be morally equal? It's it wrong to judge?

I enjoy restraining wimmen, and they seem to like it too.

Stay out of my bedroom.

It is not limited to multiple wives. Many polyamorous couples involve one woman with 2 or more men. In fact, I know a woman involved in a poly household with 3 women and 2 men. They seem happy and have worked out who does or gets what.

As Soc said, as long as any children involved are taken care of, I say we leave them alone and let them live their lives.

You'd want to re-think this if it was brought to its ultimate conclusion. The problem with polygamy is that wives, unlike money, are a finite commodity. So a few guys get all the women. leaving others with none.

With most commodities that would be a problem in itself, but without women men have a tendency to be predators. I'd argue that the reason terrorism is so rampant in mid-east countries is that there are too many guys chasing too few women.

Its also a crappy way to raise sons. Dad's too busy to spend time with them.

Polygamy has been tried before, and western society has evolved beyond it.

Have you ever considered using this insight to benefit all of mankind as a diplomat or something?

Yes but I'm much to quick with the truth. Most folks can't handle it.

Have you explained your 'lack of women = male predator' theory to this chap?

I don't think he could handle it.

If it was common among women in the US and western civilization as a whole to want to be one among many wives I think your point is absolutely valid. But most American women would never tolerate a polygamous relationship. I think that most of these sister wives in the Fundamentalist Mormon faith were raised inside the faith and so have been taught that it is ok. I also agree with you that with that many kids there is no way that kids are getting the attention from dad they need, but same could be said for that couple in Arkansas that has 19 kids all from one mom. I think that being married to one woman is just enough. I would NEVER want 2 or more wives.

No, his problem is not lack of women. Didn't you hear, he can't stand up to the powerful gay lobby in the priesthood. The queers are oppressin' the pope.
