oct 1 2025 US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told hundreds of top officers on Tuesday that more firings of senior commanders are coming as he seeks to overhaul military culture, fitness and leadership standards.

Hegseth said his rationale is straightforward. "It's nearly impossible to change a culture with the same people who helped create or even benefited from that culture," he said. "An entire generation of generals and admirals were told that they must parrot the insane fallacy that 'our diversity is our strength.'”

He criticized military leaders for focusing on diversity and climate issues rather than combat readiness.

"No more climate change worship, no more division, distraction or gender delusions, no more debris," he said. He accused politicians of forcing the military to focus on "the wrong things" and said leaders were promoted "based on their race, based on gender quotas, based on historic so-called firsts."

Fitness testing will also change, with combat troops required to take gender-neutral, age-normed assessments scored above 70%. "It's completely unacceptable to see fat generals and admirals in the halls of the Pentagon and leading commands around the country in the world," he said.

We need different specialities, and skill sets on a team, but also we need different points of view. If we had only one company in each field, they would get weak from lack of competition.

The ancient Greeks had many different systems of government, but they all were political systems. Even their monarchies had a hint of politics. That meant that an educated Greek needed to understand rhetoric and debate. It was an important part of the classical liberal arts(liberal meaning free person, so as opposed to the servile arts, slave arts). To get debates going, they needed diverse points of view, so introduced quotas.

And that was the beginning of the Western Liberal Education System. There were other education systems that only let the "best" in, but the previous generation decided who the "best" was. That meant they kept picking the same type of people, with the same views, and never evolved.
