Parents sue school district over cheating policy

I'm not a parent but I understand that as parents you want to stick up for your children. In a case like this though it seems they are almost doing a disservice to the kid. Based on this limited info do the parents stand a chance in the lawsuit?



The parents of a Northern California high school sophomore are suing the school district for kicking the teenager out of an honors class because he cheated.

When he started classes at Sequoia High School in Redwood City, the boy signed an Academy Honesty Pledge warning him that cheating is grounds for immediate removal from the advanced-level English class.

The Palo Alto Daily News ( http://bit.ly/JcyIKt) says the teen was tossed from the class for copying another student's homework.

Jack Berghouse and his wife filed a lawsuit last week against the school district claiming their son's due process rights were violated.

The suit says the school's policies regarding punishment for cheating are vague and contradictory and shouldn't be enforced.

did the parents also sign this? because it sounds like a contract of sorts, one that can't be enforced if signed by a minor without the parents consent.

It's a "no cheating" contract between the student and the school...

Of COURSE the student is going to sign it and his parents aren't doing him any favors by trying to whine their way out of their son's end of the contract.

He signed a contract agreeing not to cheat.
