Police swept through Occupy Oakland’s encampment in a plaza outside City Hall and a second, smaller camp nearby early today, arresting 85 people who were protesting as part of a nationwide movement against economic inequality and corporate greed.

City officials said they had been forced to clear the encampments because of sanitary and public safety concerns.

Several hundred officers from numerous law enforcement agencies began making arrests shortly before 5 a.m. and removing tents and makeshift shelters at the Occupy Oakland protest at Frank Ogawa Plaza near 14th Street and Broadway.

By 5:05 a.m., the bulk of the arrests had been completed, and arrestees were led away in plastic handcuffs. Most were arrested for unlawful assembly and illegal lodging, police said.

The police action in front of City Hall involved hundreds of officers from at least 10 law enforcement agencies, including the California Highway Patrol, the Alameda County sheriff’s office and various East Bay police departments. Squads of officers had assembled at the Oakland Coliseum before traveling downtown in convoys.

Officers in riot helmets began arriving in force and formed a line in the street adjacent to the plaza while motorcycle officers shut down the street. Some protesters began shouting, “Cops, go home!”

Protesters pulled a metal trash container into the middle of the intersection, and officers quickly pushed it to the side of the road.

Stupid webbway, how do we know this mess was not made when they began to assault the protestors. Look to me like their things were overturned and dis shoveled during the police raid. Their things were on shelves. Pigs don't put things on shelves.

Not all liberals are anti business, million man march etc most protest are one day. I'm sure these clowns are disrupting a lot of businesses.

Very few liberals choose business over people and especially when the protest is about the unfair practices of big business and our government.

You know its bad when a liberal mayor tells her police dept. to run those sob's out.

even though Liberals don't believe in police brutality, it exists. what will you do about it?

I complain, just like about everything else I don't like. I write emails, letters and make phone calls to my reps. We had a case here in Anchorage, I had a letter in the editors section.

I'm for smart reform, not seeing anything like that from them. Ps there are as many anarchist, Muslims, and communist as there are liberals in these crowds.

Yeah, her corporate contributors probably made some calls...corrupt politicians, money talks.

I'm sure a lot of things are "unfair" in your opinion. How about a tiger eating a monkey? You think that's fair? I sure don't, but ya know what, that's the way things work. Dumb ass.

all the good sheeple things that government wants you to do in order to make you feel you're doing something. guess what? they don't care. they will continue to do as they like because they have immunity from the law when enforcing it upon you.

so what will you do?
