Over 70 U.S. Jewish Groups Vow to Shun Far-right Israeli Minister, Invoking Kahane

With the extremist finance minister slated to appear at a Washington gala on Sunday, 73 leading Jewish organizations unite to declare: Bezalel Smotrich has no place here

WASHINGTON – Seventy-three American-Jewish organizations pledged Thursday to shun Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, drawing comparisons to similar treatment given to another far-right Jewish extremist, Meir Kahane, in the 1980s.

An initiative of the Progressive Israel Network – 10 U.S. Jewish organizations dedicated to pursuing democracy in Israel – the move solidifies what has been brewing since Smotrich became part of the new government in December: an Israeli minister, and member of Israel’s security cabinet, being proactively shunned by mainstream American Jewry.
