Opposition brings down Canadian government

TORONTO – Canadian opposition parties brought down the Conservative government in a no confidence vote Friday, triggering an election that polls show the Conservatives will win.

The opposition parties held Prime Minister Stephen Harper's government in contempt of Parliament in a 156-145 vote for failing to disclose the full financial details of his tougher crime legislation, corporate tax cuts and plans to purchase stealth fighter jets.

Opinion polls expect Harper's Conservative Party to win re-election but not a majority, meaning he likely will continue to govern with a minority in Parliament, dependent on opposition votes to stay afloat.

:okay:

(Excerpt) Last week, Harper asked police to look into the activities of Bruce Carson, a key former aide. Carson, 66, is accused of using the access he had to senior members of the government to lobby on behalf of a company affiliated with his 22-year-old fiancee, a former escort. (End)

Further research shows, (Excerpt) They say Harper brought Bruce Carson into his office when the Conservatives came to power believing that the disbarred and once-jailed ex-lawyer had paid his debt to society and deserved a chance at rebuilding his life.....

The Law Society of Upper Canada disbarred Carson in 1981, and he served time in jail after pleading guilty to two counts of defrauding clients....

“He had forged the signature of the president of a corporation and misappropriated over $15,000 belonging to the corporation for which he acted,” the document says.

“(He) forged the signature of a client from whom he misappropriated over $4,000; and misappropriated $4,900 belonging to another client.”

The allegations revolve around a company called H2O Global Group’s plan to sell water-filtration systems to reserves with water-quality problems.

Carson’s 22-year-old girlfriend, Michele McPherson, signed a contract with the company last Aug. 31 that would entitle her to 20 per cent of the project’s gross sales, APTN reported....

McPherson also acknowledged her past work in the “sex trade.” APTN had reported that she worked as an Ottawa escort who went by the name Leanna VIP. (End)

Ahhh, right wing governments. Those morally and ethically superior folks who only wish to impart their family and religious values to others. What better emissary than a disbarred and once-jailed ex-lawyer currently engaged to a former sex trade worker while trying to get her a 20% skim-off-the-top from a government contract.

Almost brings one to tears, does it not?

I believe the Conservatives will win a majority. Some recent polls have put them in the neighborhood of 37 - 40%, which is roughly what it will take to win a majority of seats in the House of Commons. They're polling over 40% in Ontario. I believe Canadians (except for Apple, apparently) are ready for an effective government.

What's hilarious is this is precisely what Harper wanted, despite what he may have said to the contrary. This was a dumb move by the Libs/NDP.

Here's the glaring difference between the Liberals and the Conservatives.

(Excerpt) The Liberals’ Ignatieff tried to shift focus onto his program.

He promised more spending on a family caregiver program, early child care and post-secondary education and training, instead of the Conservative program to spend on fighter jets, mega-jails and corporate tax cuts.

“That’s all I have in my bag, there’s no hidden agenda,” Ignatieff told reporters. (End)

Do we spend tax dollars on helping people look after their elderly parents and on child care and education OR on fighter jets, mega-jails and corporate tax cuts? I don't see wanting the former to be a dumb move.
