A Dutch court has ordered prosecutors to put a right-wing politician on trial for making anti-Islamic statements.

"

Freedom Party leader Geert Wilders made a controversial film last year equating Islam with violence and has likened the Koran to Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf.
"In a democratic system, hate speech is considered so serious that it is in the general interest to... draw a clear line," the court in Amsterdam said."

----

The three judges said that they had weighed Mr Wilders's "one-sided generalisations" against his right to free speech, and ruled that he had gone beyond the normal leeway granted to politicians.

----

The court also considers appropriate criminal prosecution for insulting Muslim worshippers because of comparisons between Islam and Nazism made by Wilders," it added.

----

This shit is SO FUCKED UP. Amazing that we have so called 1st world countries that have decided what people can and can't believe. That people would be prosecuted for what they believe.

This is why America is one step ahead of the curve, and hopefully this "hate speech" bullshit will never catch on in America to the point where it would be illegal.

OK, maybe I don't necessarily agree with this.

But whenever someone who's political views you absolutely despise gets hit by a bus, you sort of say, eh, that's horrible that he got hit by a bus, but I fucking hated that man.

I don't agree with these types of prosecutions at all.

I do have some sympathy with Geert Wilders description of this decision as a "black day for myself and for freedom of speech". However, his statements would carry more weight if he hadn't previously written "I've had enough of the Qur'an in the Netherlands: forbid that fascist book", in a newspaper article.

Some people should make up their minds about freedom of speech and stick to it.

The same kind of thing can happen in the USA under current laws. Inciting to riot, Anti discrimination laws, etc

To bad we don't have some anti stupidity laws.

I know. I hate that fucking guy, but I subscribe to the strong version of free speech, which means that I think even free speech about ending free speech should be allowed.

They should repeal that law after this guys in prison, IMHO.

I'm not that up on Dutch law but i'd still be surprised if the prosecution was conducted with any great vigour and even more surprised if he were to receive a prison term.

Well neither is Watermark, but his ignorance of a particular topic has never hindered his willingness to pontificate about it.
