People on U.S. college campuses — oases for overseas students and faculty who get education and teaching opportunities that would be impossible at home — are increasingly being targeted for intimidation.
A new report from Freedom House provides details, from a large database the nonprofit compiled, of incidents that involve harassment and intimidation of students, faculty and visiting scholars. Dictators are “threatening families in home countries” after students attend pro-democracy rallies on campus, while classroom discussions “are surveilled and relayed to staff at foreign embassies,” and event organizers have been “pressured not to host guest lectures, and public events on human rights are disrupted.”
The largest number of threats are from China, the report says, but the governments of Egypt, India, Rwanda and Saudi Arabia have also engaged in such abuse within the United States.
