When I grew up, sexuality was considered by the masses as binary. You were gay or straight. Society, in all of its anxiety felt the need to put people into a set category.

It’s not true for all people, in fact not true for most people.

People fall into a continuum, very few people are 100% heterosexual, and very few are 100% homosexual. It looks that way due to the social pressure that pushed weaker individuals into categories.

Look at what happens when people are forced into single sex situations. The majority will eventually turn to each other for sexual release, when they could just masterbate.

Finally the new generation is acknowledging this fact.

It’s not a “contagion”, it’s people being free to be themselves and not conform to societal expectations.

I have no real opinion on the subject,

but I cannot accept as fact that most people would turn to a same sex partner if that were all that was available.

It could be true, and I could be wrong,
but intuitively, I don't believe that level of adaptability is typical.
Perhaps some up until then heterosexual people might do that,
but most is hard for me to believe.

Even in prison, same sex situations are usually rape and not consensual sex from what I understand.
I've never been to prison and can't say for sure.

I will admit one thing.

I love neatness and appreciate concise labels wherever they may be usefully applied.

I love for things to fall neatly into slots,
and when they don't,
I'm admittedly uncomfortable.

This, I've been told, is common among people
who are more likely to try to alter their circumstances to suit themselves
than to adapt to the circumstances that they encounter.

I've always been that way.
It's not a trait that I cultivated but rather what comes naturally.
Music, for example, that doesn't fall into a definable category
is usually not the music that I enjoy.

But that’s not how human nature, actually nature in general. Nature is messy and while there are generalities in nature, there are messy exceptions everywhere. Mutations are much more common than one would suspect because culture try’s to suppress them. Funny, because they are often strengths not weaknesses.

That would, of course, be a subjective evaluation.
People also say that the ethnic diversity in our nation is a strength,
even as we are unable to replicate the social progressiveness of more homogeneous nations.

Some things have to be accepted because "it is what it is,"
but such things are not always demonstrably better than a situation where they don't exist.

I’m not saying there are not negatives, I’ve never known anything that is perfectly “good” or anything that is perfectly “bad”.

Sounds about right. In a civilized society that allows freedom of choice, people will choose what they want within the bound of the law.

Agreed. It's an example of the freedom of society. Notice how it's authoritarian assholes like Earl and ExLax who want to force people into RW approved pigeonholes under the full weight of the Federal or State governments.
