Ohio SB#5

Mott the Hoople

Sweet Jane
I love saying "I told you so" but it looks like Ohio SB#5 will probably die in the house as it has become a toxic issue for Republicans.

http://news.firedoglake.com/2011/03/24/in-ohio-sb-5-stalled-as-republicans-want-to-weaken-the-bill/

I don't think they will try to change the bill so that Firemen and Policemen are exempted because then it becomes blatantly about union busting and not balancing the state budget. So that wouldn't fly. I think that it's probably going to die in the house unless they remove the provisions affecting unions and collective bargaining. In which case the Bill has little if anything to offer. I don't think it will make it out of the house. To many Republicans are scared about their political survival.

The question I have is, have Republicans awakened a sleeping giant? I think they have and that's why I don't think Kasich will dig in his heals like Scott Walker did in Wisconsin. I think he will let the bill die in the house and move on to other issues and hope that voters have forgotten about this by 2014. If he decides to persue this it would be irrational as it seems almost a certainty that this would go to a public referendum and the bills odds do not look good of winning and if Kasich loses the referendum on SB#5 his entire political career will be toast. There'll be no shot at running for the Senate or the Presidency.

this is how democracy dies. certain groups of people with stronger unification hold power over all voting blocks which inevitably reduces the liberties and representation of others.

I can't wait until the real workers of america have had enough of the union slugs like mott

That's the ticket!

Tell your fellow Americans what you REALLY think of them!

The envy and petty jealousy dripping from tinny's post is positively sublime!

Hidden behind all the prayers he says on Sunday and all the empty platitudes he dishes out when talking to another face-to-face, is this irrational jealousy that he's been trying to keep hidden.

With One-Vote Margin, Ohio State Senate Passes SB 5

The bill now moves to the state House, which like the Senate, is under Republican control.

Gov. John Kasich (R) has endorsed the measure and is expected to sign it when it reaches his desk.

Those who are opposed to any restraint on the power of public unions is either an idiot or a socialist.

Who ever said there weren't constraints on public unions. The reverse is also true, anyone who supports the gutting of public union is either an idiot or a socialist or a fascist.

The truly ironic thing about his post is that I am not nor ever have been a member of a labor union or in any way associated with one. It's amazing how these boot liking, lock step walking Bushies would would glady dig the peanuts out of his shit, roared for joy when he said we was on a mission from God and literally walked over a cliff with him accuse others of fanaticism.

Supporting the right of working people to organize to negotiate their conditions of employment and their wages and benefits is as American a right as there is.

I don't think it's going to reach his desk and if it does it will be substantially different then what left the Senate. Keep in mind too, they didn't have the votes on the commerce panel because several Republicans opposed it. They had to kick two of the Republican members off the panel an replace them to get that one extra vote. This Bill is politically toxic and career suicide for many Republicans who support it, including Kasich if he signs it into law.

As long as they are negotiating with the correct counter party, I have NO problem with them doing so. Which is why WI did the correct thing and left future pay increases (beyond inflation) to a PUBLIC referendum. Meaning the public workers could state their case to the public and the public could then decide.

But no... you want the continuation of 'hey, I will fund your campaign if you give me what I want when we 'bargain' in the future'

Mott, are you not paying attention? Many more states are going hard line on unions following Wisc's lead. This is like the finger in the dike prior to the busting.

Let him be. Mott wishes to pretend that the workers in WI and Ohio will suddenly become 'slaves' with 'no rights' blah blah blah.... all the while ignoring the fact that other states ALREADY have such laws in place and their workers are neither slaves nor without rights.

I'm wierder than mott, I'm against the unions but want dems to get a freaking spine and at least be competitive if not but up a decent fight once in a while.

Good lord, how many times does that lame argument have to be eviscerated? Your premise, that the tax payers are not represented in negotiation is an utterly wrong premise. If you think Democrats have been push overs for unions in contract negotiations, then you simply don't know jack shit about this topic cause I can assure you they have not been.

What states other then some southern right to work states? The only one I can think of is Indiana. Guess what? Shit's hit the fan in Indiana too.
