Ohio killer's execution takes almost 25 minutes

A condemned man appeared to gasp several times and took an unusually long time to die — more than 20 minutes — in an execution carried out Thursday with a combination of drugs never before tried in the U.S.

Dennis McGuire’s attorney Allen Bohnert called the convicted killer’s death ‘‘a failed, agonizing experiment’’ and added: ‘‘The people of the state of Ohio should be appalled at what was done here today in their names.’’

An attorney for McGuire’s family said it plans to sue the state over what happened.

McGuire’s lawyers had attempted last week to block his execution, arguing that the untried method could lead to a medical phenomenon known as ‘‘air hunger’’ and could cause him to suffer ‘‘agony and terror’’ while struggling to catch his breath.

McGuire, 53, made loud snorting noises during one of the longest executions since Ohio resumed capital punishment in 1999. Nearly 25 minutes passed between the time the lethal drugs began flowing and McGuire was pronounced dead at 10:53 a.m.

Executions under the old method were typically much shorter and did not cause the kind of sounds McGuire made.

Ohio prisons spokeswoman JoEllen Smith had no comment on how the execution went but said a review will be conducted as usual. The agency didn’t release a timeline of McGuire’s execution, breaking with the usual practice of providing it the same day, and said it was being reviewed and likely would be available Friday.

Prison officials gave intravenous doses of two drugs, the sedative midazolam and the painkiller hydromorphone, to put McGuire to death for the 1989 rape and fatal stabbing of a pregnant newlywed, Joy Stewart.

:rofl2:

They should go back to lead poisoning....or good Old Sparky.

This phrase is the only part of the story that matters, that we should care about, and empathize over. This guy was filth.

That's as maybe but he was still entitled to a humane death, otherwise how can you claim to be a civilised country? I also read that his family were there to watch, how do you think they felt about it? Would you bring back pressing to death or hang, drawing and quartering? It's funny that we look askance at brutal regimes like the Chinese yet they execute with a bullet to the back of the head which is a hell of a lot quicker than the death this guy suffered. Do you know why Ohio ran out of drugs? It was because they used to be supplied by a British company but it was stopped when they had a change of heart about supplying drugs for executions.

No shortage of rope or bullets in the USA. Hell, we could even make the rope out of hemp and get the pot heads on board.

So he was snoring, while asleep.
Pretty peaceful I'd say.

1) Murderers and rapists like this guy do not deserve a humane death. He deserved a death like the one depicted in Law Abiding Citizen. On a physical, legal level, civilization affords us all rights due to the presence of corruption and human error. From the standpoint of karma - this guy was just beginning to learn how failure is rewarded after death.

2) The family should feel ashamed to be his kin. If anything else, they should feel sorry for the victim and those impacted by her tragedy. If I were this guy's nephew, I would have long ago stopped calling him my uncle. I would celebrate his removal from my tree.

I don't get why they don't put them out first... Propofol them into oblivion. This "experiment" crap is overwhelmingly stupid.

So what would you have them do? Set a pack of hungry dogs on him like Kim Jong Un's uncle?

That would be awesome, but to your surprise, I would actually end capital punishment, lock them up without parole, and save a fuckton of money. I would also prohibit multiple appeals.
