As Democrats blasted FBI Director James Comey over his decision to reopen the bureau’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private server, the White House insisted Monday that the agency chief was not attempting to sway next week’s election.
President Obama “doesn’t believe Director Comey is trying to influence the outcome of an election,” White House press secretary Josh Earnest said during his daily briefing.
“He’s a man of integrity and character and principle,” Earnest said of Comey, adding that he would not “defend or criticize” Comey’s actions.
Earnest, meanwhile, added that “we have no knowledge on why Director Comey” reopened the probe, saying that the White House “was not given advance notice” about the Friday letter.
Earnest said Comey, a Republican whom Obama nominated to lead the FBI in 2013, was “somebody who’s had a distinguished legal career that was rooted (in the fact) that his political views don’t interfere with his responsibilities as an attorney or a law enforcement officer.”
Obama “continues to have confidence in his ability to do his job,” Earnest said.
