Obama Says ‘No’ to Legalizing Marijuana to Help Economy

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama had some fun with at least one question at his online town hall, saying he doesn't think legalizing marijuana is a good strategy for turning around the economy.

Obama told the audience Thursday that one of the most popular questions was whether legalization of the illicit drug would help pull the nation out of the recession. The president jokingly said: "I don't know what this says about the online audience."

In a serious response, he said he didn't think that was a good economic policy.

This can easily be translated in to the following:
"legalizing it isn't sound economic policy because it prevents our law enforcement agencies from seizing the property of those sellers and users for their own budget benefit."
 
Word. Let's not forget he's leaving the 13 medical states alone. Anyone care to bet with Cali collecting taxes we'll see more states go medical.
 
States have medical mj and obama will leave them alone. Unfortunatly Louisiana is too redneck and so is Chevron with the Nazi drug test.

unfortunately that is not reality and not accurate. the reality is that the fed law against marijuana trumps the state laws, hence why obama had to reverse bush's policy of going after medicinal marijuana shops in cali and other states.

the feds need to legalize it at their level or at a minimum decriminalize at their level for the states to have any real say it the legalization of marijuana.

what interests me is that we have these presidents (clinton, bush, now obama) who have without a doubt partaken of at least marijuana and we know cocaine, yet they still want drugs illegal. i was disappointed when clinton continued the ridiculus war on drugs and did not at least decriminalize it...bush, no surprise given his history in texas...but obama, i really thought he might try to decriminalize at a minimum. i believe he has talked about how drug laws unfairly target minorities (maybe he hasn't)...so here is his chance to rectify his belief about drug laws (which i don't agree).

he won't go after medicinal marijuana or marijuana users that are legal under state...so why not go all the way obama? why not pressure the congress to change the laws? i wonder if he could make an executive order to not enforce federal marijuana laws???

Simply put, Obama doesn't have the political will or courage to do the right thing on this and many other issues. America will have to resign itself to half-measures .. except where it applies to the banking industry where he's quite willing to go overboard.

Clinton was more disastrous on this issue than was Bush. America's prison population exploded exponentially under Clinton, who like most democrats, have to prove they're "tough on crime" so republicans won't call them names.

Bush was clueless and I bet he couldn't wait to get out of office so he can get back to Crawford and light up a doobie, or do a line.

The fact is, there are Federal laws against possession of marijuana. Obama could easily push for these laws to be repealed, but he doesn't want to. Why?

You are correct that marijuana is a State issue, per the 9th and 10th amendments. So is education and healthcare.

that might have been part of it, but he also had to have a way of paying for all those extra cops that he put on the street. heavy enforcement of drug laws and forfeiture of assets was a big factor.
