Obama: No such thing as "shovel ready projects!"

http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/10/13/president-obama-looks-forward-and-back/

In the magazine article, Mr. Obama reflects on his presidency, admitting that he let himself look too much like “the same old tax-and-spend Democrat,” realized too late that “there’s no such thing as shovel-ready projects” and perhaps should have “let the Republicans insist on the tax cuts” in the stimulus.

Really, Mr. President?

Obama told me he had no regrets about the broad direction of his presidency. But he did identify what he called “tactical lessons.” He let himself look too much like “the same old tax-and-spend liberal Democrat.” He realized too late that “there’s no such thing as shovel-ready projects” when it comes to public works. Perhaps he should not have proposed tax breaks as part of his stimulus and instead “let the Republicans insist on the tax cuts” so it could be seen as a bipartisan compromise.

I thought it would be fun to go back and compile a list of comments made by you pinheads, regarding these mythical "shovel ready" projects, the president now admits don't exist.... [I love the search feature here!!]

Honestly, I'm not sure why you had the impression that the created jobs were going to be mainly "permanent." Even infrastructure, "shovel-ready" kinds of jobs are by their very nature temporary. In my mind, that was actually the idea.

Tax cuts to small business and government spending on infrastructure projects would both be beneficial to job growth. In that scenario, the shovel ready infrastructure jobs would likely be the quickest to ramp up.

As for the economy, they should take the remaining stimulus money (which for some moronic reason hasn't been put to work yet) and use it to actually create jobs that are shovel ready. Roads, bridges, levees etc... jobs that can be temporary (use a boost here for the next several years while the rest of the economy recovers) while at the same time providing a long term benefit to the country.

does anyone have a better solution than infusing a weak economy with cash

part of the problem is the lack of 'shovel ready' projects and a lack of aggression on the part of the 'czar' in charge of selecting projects to fund.

Yes Back its not big enough. Its a start. You have to get moving on making more shovel ready investiments. They will come and it will work. You have to bring the people along with you or it wont work either. This is also a crisis of citizen belief in government.

Lorax - Don't bother. That list above does not represent anything more than a list of projects that some mayors have requested for their respective cities and towns. Nothing more. Basically, local officials provided Congress with projects in their respective jurisdictions that they would like to see funded and that are "shovel-ready." Obviously, these folks have every incentive to be overinclusive. Then, ignorant shits like the knuckle-head at the link conflate that list with the projects that will actually be funded by Congress. It just ain't so.

The President is actually wrong on this, there ARE shovel ready projects...

The TEA Party has a Shovel Ready Project slated for November 2nd!

Yes, two years and 2 trillion dollars later, Obama says these so-called "shovel ready" jobs do not exist. That's quite the revelation to the voters, I'm sure!
