Obama: Islamic State will ‘inevitably’ be defeated, but networks will persist

President Obama vowed Thursday that the Islamic State is “inevitably going to be defeated,” but he predicted that the terrorist networks it spawns are likely to continue operating after the group loses its major strongholds in Iraq and Syria.

Saying that recent battlefield defeats have shown that the Islamic State is “not invincible,” Obama outlined a strategy to use a recently recaptured air base in Iraq as a hub for U.S.-backed Iraqi forces to “push into Mosul,” the major northern Iraqi city that the militants seized in 2014.

Obama made the remarks in a news conference at the Pentagon after meeting with his national security team to discuss the fight against the Islamic State. He is scheduled leave Saturday for a vacation with his family on Martha’s Vineyard through Aug. 21.

At the Defense Department, Obama conferred with top military and national security officials to assess the battle. Also attending were Vice President Biden, Defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter, CIA Director John Brennan and other top officials.

Asked whether he had qualms about Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump receiving classified intelligence briefings, Obama said his administration would “go by the law” and tradition in delivering the briefings to Trump so that in the event he won the election, he “would not be starting from scratch” in getting up to speed on national security matters. But he also cautioned that those who aspire to the White House “need to start acting like a president” and ensure that secrets are kept.

Earlier this week, the Pentagon disclosed that the United States conducted airstrikes on an Islamic State stronghold in Sirte, Libya, in a significant expansion of the American campaign against the group, which is also known as ISIS or ISIL.

Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said Monday that Libya’s Western-backed unity government requested the air support as its forces battled to reclaim the Mediterranean coastal city, which became an important Islamic State stronghold after militants seized it last year.

While the Islamic State has been losing territory in Iraq and Syria, eroding the self-proclaimed “caliphate” that it wants to expand across a wide swath of the Middle East, Africa and Asia, the group has demonstrated an ability to direct or inspire terrorist attacks in Western countries, including the United States, France and Belgium, as well as in Turkey, a NATO ally, and war-torn Iraq and Afghanistan.

According to U.S. officials, the Islamic State’s affiliate in Libya has emerged as its most powerful branch. Yet, U.S. airstrikes have been limited there. In November, a strike targeted the group’s leader in Libya, Wisam al-Zubaidi, a former Iraqi police officer also known as Abu Nabil al-Anbari, and Pentagon officials said they believe he was killed.

not true. The "Unity gov't" (GNA) has no army -only pledges, The Misrata Brigades are doing the fighting in Sirte

Misrata Brigades Threaten to Withdraw Loyalty to GNA
The GNA relies heavily on brigades such as Misrata’s for defending Libya against ISIS and other threats to Libya’s security since it does not have an official army.
However with rising tension there is growing worry that the brigades will walk away from the GNA. This is a risk to Libya’s security and its ability to rid the country of ISIS, especially since many armed groups fighting with the GNA were recruited through Misrata forces

Obama is obviously correct in that AQI begat ISIS, and to AQI -ISIS will return.
What he'snot saying is he allowed ISIS to run wild (JV comments) and not go after them until they had defeated the Iraqi army in battle.

It should never have gotten to this point - any insurgency going forward is going to be stubborn and long lasting

Everything took a back seat to politics in this administration.

They didn't press for a SOFA with the Iraqis because Obama was determined to end it. They lied about the Benghazi attack being due to a two bit video that probably five people in the whole world saw.

And ISIS was JV because 'the terrorists were on the run' was the narrative that reflected well on Obama.

It's very difficult to penetrate their fog of plausible deniability. Take the Iran deal mentioned yesterday.
It looks to me like the $400million was taken out of the disputed funds as a slush fund.
Iran has been pressing for that money for 35 years .why else was it suddenly released but as "ransom" or at least linkage?
The adm denies both ( don't believe your lying eyes)

Iraq's SOFA was more complex -but you are correct it was never pushed because Obama wanted out.
al-Sadr and Maliki might have been negotiated, but Obama never even tried.
When we pulled out, Iraq's army became a victim of sectarian purging.
That led to ISIS being able to beat the army in combat.
That led to Iran and Shiite militias running wild today.

Bengazi is more obfuscation ..the Rhodes memo shows talking points after it was confirmed terrorist attack.
But they use CIA initial stories of the video.. did the CIA update that memo? why in the hell would they not?
But re-electing Obama became the narrative at all costs, even the truth

your fucks created this whole mess you lying traitor to this nation

Obama created this mess when he prematurely withdrew from Iraq. 95 Marines died taking Fallujah from these fuckers all the back in 2004 and as soon as he was able he handed them it right back on a silver platter and now the city is a pile of rubble.
