This story was buried on page 6 at the end of the World News section of yesterdays print edition of the Washington Post. Notice the report was released on Wednesday but the Post saved it for Saturday, the least read edition of the week. I guess the miracle was that it was reported at all...

Obama administration spent billions to fix failing schools, and it didn’t work

"One of the Obama administration’s signature efforts in education, which pumped billions of federal dollars into overhauling the nation’s worst schools, failed to produce meaningful results, according to a federal analysis.

Test scores, graduation rates and college enrollment were no different in schools that received money through the School Improvement Grants program — the largest federal investment ever targeted to failing schools — than in schools that did not."

But vanquishing non-existant WMD is obviously the priority over preparing our nation to succeed in our globalized economy.

If we're being honest here...something that isn't very popular in the new America...the 'fixing' of the schools was literally that. Job creation under the Stimulus that fixed crumbling buildings.

It also saved millions of teachers's jobs.

It did nothing to change the way parents raise their kids, and ultimately form their education parameters.

he money went to states to distribute to their poorest-performing schools — those with exceedingly low graduation rates, or poor math and reading test scores, or both. Individual schools could receive up to $2 million per year for three years, on the condition that they adopt one of the Obama administration’s four preferred measures: replacing the principal and at least half the teachers, converting into a charter school, closing altogether, or undergoing a “transformation,” including hiring a new principal and adopting new instructional strategies, new teacher evaluations and a longer school day.

The Education Department did not track how the money was spent, other than to note which of the four strategies schools chose.
can't just throw money at poor performing schools. In Florida under Jeb Bush we got a LOT better results-and a lot of money thru "Race to the Top Grants."

But schools relied on a lot of testing -and parents started to question all the testing ( while the bureaucrats threw in more and more testing) is really needed.
So they ar cutting back on the testing, and moving more towards charter schools -but yu gotta be careful how to do that.
Frankly I think only the states have a clue, and this Devos woman is gona block grant a bunch ofmoney and leave it upto the states.

Which may or may not work -but it's the only real possible move
