Rasmussen Reports has President Obama's approval rate above 50%
January 24th, 2011 4:02 pm ET

The newest poll from Rasmussen Reports did not make headlines on their own site, but it quite possibly should have. According to Rasmussen Reports, which actually tends to slant Republicans, 52% of "likely voters" approve of the job President Obama compared to 47% who disapprove. The 52% number is the highest for Obama in 15 months. As late as September of 2010 the President's approval rating was down to 41% in the Rasmussen poll.

The poll numbers are also positive under Rasmussen's "approval index" number. The "approval index" is calculated by subtracting the percent who "strongly disapprove" from those who "strongly approve" of the President. Rasmussen has 31% with a "strongly approving" of the President with 35% "strongly disapproving" for an approval index number of (-4). In early January Rasmussen had the President with an approval index number of (-16). In late October of last year the President's approval index was at (-20).

The "Obama surge" is also documented by other polls. A recent survey had all ten of the major polls showing President Obama's number going up in recent weeks. Many polls, like Rasmussen, have the President getting above the psychologically significant 50% number. In Junuary of 1983 President Reagan's approval rating was at only 35%. Reagan recovered along with economy to help him win re-election by a landslide in 1984. President Obama hopes to follow the same pattern.

In the short term the President's poll numbers may aid him in the anticipated budget fight with Republicans. In his State of the Union speech President Obama is expected to call for increased "investments" in infrastructure and research. According to the President, the United States faces global competition much like it did after the Russians launched Sputnik during the Cold War. Before the President has even given the speech Republicans are already rejecting the "investments" as "more government spending" and calling for more spending cuts than the President will provide. Some believe the fight over the debt ceiling and/or budget could lead to a government shutdown later this year. Under that scenario, the pubilc will ultimately decide who to blame when the federal parks are shut down and Social Security checks are no longer processed.

Whats interesting is you sig....

A little history seems to be in order....

from 1976 to 2004, the broadcast networks, in an attempt to avoid favoritism in color coding, standardized on the convention of alternating every four years between blue and red the color used for the incumbent party.[7][8] According to another source, in 1976, John Chancellor, the anchorman for NBC Nightly News, asked his network's engineers to construct a large electronic map of the USA. The map was placed in the network's election-night news studio. If Jimmy Carter, the Democratic candidate that year, won a state, it would light up in red; if Gerald Ford, the Republican, carried a state, it would light up in blue. The feature proved to be so popular that four years later all three major television networks would use colors to designate the states won by the presidential candidates on Election Night. NBC continued to use the color scheme employed in 1976 for several years. Fellow NBC newsman David Brinkley famously referred to the 1980 election map as showing Ronald Reagan's 44-state landslide as resembling a "suburban swimming pool".

According to AlterNet and The Washington Post, the terms were coined by journalist Tim Russert, during his televised coverage of the 2000 presidential election.[1] That was not the first election during which the news media used colored maps to graphically depict voter preferences in the various states, but it was the first time a standard color scheme took hold.

Since 2000, usage of the term has been expanded to differentiate between states being perceived as liberal and those perceived as conservative.
This unofficial system of political colors used in the United States is the reverse of that in most other long-established democracies, where blue represents right-wing and conservative parties, and red represents left-wing and social democratic parties.

So.....Heaven was blue, and hell was red....now its reversed....hahahaha

He is doing a good job. His ratings reflect that, just as Bush's crap ratings reflect the crap he shoveled on the country.

He's back down again... :palm:

I saw where Reagan's approval rating was about 30% after his second SATU address....

Looks like if things keep up, and the economy even gets a bit better, we will have a two term Obama.

Red stands for commie, and the MSM didn't want to associate that with the Democrat Party.
